Biden tells AIPAC: Israel must support two-state solution

By Natasha Mozgovaya and Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondents, and The Associated Press

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden pressed Israel on Tuesday to support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in an address to the leading pro-Israel lobby during its annual conference in Washington.

"Israel has to work for a two state-solution. You're not going to like my saying this, but not build more settlements, dismantle existing outposts and allow Palestinians freedom of movement ... and access to economic opportunity," Biden told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Biden also said the Palestinian Authority "must combat terror and incitement against Israel."

1. But they won't.
Administrations have been saying the same things for decades, and Israel continues doing what it does. What exactly is this administration going to DO about Israel's noncompliance? Nothing?

4. Let's wait and see what Obama does.
Obama is not Bush or Clinton and, unlike previous Presidents, Obama has a unique background that gives him a wider perspective on the I/P conflict.

8. I agree - this was a very strong co-ordinated statement of policy
In addition to Biden's speech this morning, there was a similar Kerry speech. Rahm Emmanuel spoke the same thing yesterday and Jones has made recent very strong comments.

What they seem to be doing is telling AIPAC that this is US policy. There has never been a stronger, more comprehensive push back to AIPAC in the past. In addition, I doubt the Hamas statement yesterday that they are stopping any rockets and are only fighting only for land that Israel didn't have in 1967. Though not enough, these are major steps. What is clear is that there has been a lot of work behind the scenes.

Here is an article from the Hill - http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/biden-defends-outreach-to-iran-in-aipac-speech-2009-05-05.html

(Some cynics posting here need to remember that just 2 days ago some of them were attacking the men for being on the agenda.)

13. They are like the NRA
All or nothing, and even then, they will support the Republican over the Democrat.

11. The Boston Globe did a good piece on Biden and Kerry's tough love for Israel -

About the 2 state solution, Biden also used these words:

"This is a show-me deal. Not based on faith. Show me."

Kudos to Biden and Kerry for standing their ground.
