An end to abstinence only, in black and white

http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2010/assets/hhs.pdf (.pdf):

The 2010 Budget proposes a new Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative to support community-based and faith-based efforts to reduce teen pregnancy using evidence-based and promising models. In addition, a new Strengthening Communities Fund will help build the capacity of non-profit organizations and State, Local and Tribal entities to better serve low-income and disadvantaged populations. This Budget also proposes funding for (1) a new child welfare initiative, and (2) a human services case management system for Federally-declared disasters. This Budget eliminates funding for Community-Based Abstinence Education, the mandatory Title V Abstinence Education program, the Compassion Capital Fund, and Rural Community Facilities.

This is no surprise, but it's a reminder of the way in which a budget shifts not just money but also priorities and politics. In this case, it will will cut off streams of funding to religiously oriented groups allied with the Bush White House.

5. Apparently there still is money going to "faith-based efforts" though. What's up with that?
Let's have some separation of church and state here, dammit! Govt money should not be going to religious groups.

8. You should have prayed for that yesterday, National Prayer Day. Now, you'll have to wait until
next year.

11. I don't have a problem with it as long as they don't use
...religious bias in hiring or determining
who gets services.

Catholic and Lutheran Social Service Agencies
have long served the community.

That is GREAT as long as they don't hire only
adherents or only help the religious.

12. Doesn't this say it's the proposal for 2010?
If I'm not mistaken, that should mean it doesn't go into effect immediately.

anyway, there are many ugly christofascist tentacles to be tackled. I am THRILLED to see every small step towards the dismantling the political power cunningly grabbed over decades by the anti-science Ideologues who, in their compassion, are trying to protect all of us against painful and deadly smitings from their all-loving Guy-On-A-Throne-Made-of-Clouds.

7. Abstinence is religion's way of making more sheeple.
Birth control is science's way of offering freedom of choice.

9. Both Dems and Pubs distract us with a few wedge issues, while they run
a government that is corrupt to the core. They plunder our Social Security trust fund, they plunder other nations, they take our money to make drugs, then charge us more for them than they charge other countries. They torture in our name and make enemies who want to kill us with their foreign policy.

Bush makes billionsires of oil sheiks, Halliburton, Blackwater, Pharma and others with our tax dollars, and they spring for his library. Our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren will still be paying interest to China and our other creditors.

Rejoice, America. Abtinence only is dead. Yeayyyy, condoms.

Investigate Bush? Shhhh.
