Microsoft India: To Cut Local Staff Numbers By About 1%

NEW DELHI (Dow Jones)--Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will reduce the number of its employees in India by about one percent as part of the software company's global business realignment plans, its local unit said Monday.

"The process began in the last few days and will be completed by June-end," a Microsoft India spokeswoman told Dow Jones Newswires in an emailed statement.

Microsoft now employs about 5,500 employees across six business units in India.

Microsoft Corp. said in January that it will reduce its global staff strength by 5,000 employees this year, of which 1,400 have already been laid off.
