84 Afghan girls hospitalized in apparent poisoning (NEW attack today)
Source: Associated Press

MUHMUD RAQI, Afghanistan (AP) — At least 84 Afghan girls were admitted to a hospital Tuesday for headaches and vomiting in the third apparent poison attack on a girls school in as many weeks, officials and doctors said.

The students were lining up outside their school in northeastern Afghanistan on Tuesday morning when a strange odor filled the yard, and one girl collapsed, said the school's principal, Mossena, who was herself in a hospital bed gasping for breath as she described the event.

"We took her inside and splashed water on her face," said Mossena, who like many Afghans goes by one name. Then other girls started passing out, and all the students were sent home.

It was unclear if the incident was a deliberate attack on the school, though the Taliban and other conservative extremist groups in Afghanistan who oppose girls' education have been known to target schoolgirls. Under the Taliban's 1996-2001 regime, girls were not allowed to attend school.

2. Excellent question
An even better one would be why can't the Afghani military do it?

4. Nintendo pilots are too busy with wedding parties, hospitals and other civilians
.
.
.

Ya think the USA is actually gonna PROTECT the civilians by putting tens of thousands of soldiers "in harms way"??

- ya know

schools,

weddings

hospitals

private dwellings

etc.,

USA's "tough guys" might have to take some REAL risks - feck that - call in "air support"

shoot first, ask questions later.

SOP doncha know???

AND - anyone wants to really get a view on USA's aggression - do a search on "Friendly Fire" incidents

USA consistently blows its own allies and personnel away with it's inconsiderate/aggressive approach.

DOZENS since the Bush Administration began

"Smart" bombs, guided by stupid people

Yeah, that's workin' real good

(sigh)

6. The military is busy guarding the schools they rebuilt after the Taliban blew them up
Obama needs to send in the peace corpse and hope they don't get their throats cut for teaching "western" education that he Taliban are so frightened of.
no music
no dancing
no playgrounds

no nothing

except offering praise five or six times daily like they did in the good old days of the 90's

5. Wish I could afford to put a bounty on Taliban dicks.
I don't really see a use for men who do this to women.

7. The taliban has denied they did it and there is no evidence they did this.
But AP doesn't carry the denial.

And the Independent actually accuses the Taliban in the headline though it provides not a shred of evidence in the article and quotes the provincial police chief who says there's no evidence this was an attack.

But it's a good propaganda opportunity.

Girls targeted in 'Taliban gas attack']

...the insurgents' spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid denied any involvement. "Harming children is not the work of holy warriors," he said. "We absolutely reject this."

...Gulcheena described the gas smelling like a chemical known locally as Mallatin, which farmers sometimes spread on fields to poison foraging birds. The provincial police chief, Matiullah Safi, said none of the students, teachers or support staff had seen anything suspicious. "It looks like something was sprayed in the school but so far no one has been arrested," he said. "There's no proof, at the moment, that this was an attack."
