NRA, Mayors Agree on Gun Change
Source: NBC/DFW News

The National Rifle Association and big-city mayors have rarely agreed on gun laws. But they’ve found something they may both support: the Obama administration’s call for full law-enforcement access to data from traces of guns used in crimes.

The rare, and somewhat vague, consensus between the NRA and the mayors appears likely to increase the chances that Congress will pass the reform

The administration is proposing a partial rollback of a 2003 amendment named for Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.). Under the changes, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would be able to share gun-tracing information with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, and prosecutors would be privy to the information.

Supporters say the change would help law enforcement target the source of guns used in crimes and would help prevent illegal drug trafficking.

-----

Christopher Cox, an NRA spokesman, stopped shy of endorsing the reform but did not oppose it: “While we do not believe any change is necessary, we appreciate the President’s decision to support law enforcement and not gun control activists.”

2. Subject to misinterpretation because NRA said "President’s decision to support law enforcement and
not gun control activists.”

IMO all credible pro-RKBA groups call for government to aggressively enforce existing laws, something that has not and is not happening.

In fact, one California country says it will no longer prosecute certain crimes so a citizen is wasting her/his time by calling 911.

4. How, exactly, is that subject to misinterpretation?
The regulation in question tracks weapons used in crimes across state lines, to find the source of weapons used in crimes.

What does that have to do with "In fact, one California country says it will no longer prosecute certain crimes so a citizen is wasting her/his time by calling 911."?

Abso-fucking-lutely NOTHING.

6. Apparently you can't understand the OP subject "NRA, Mayors Agree on Gun Change" and the last quote,
"we appreciate the President’s decision to support law enforcement and not gun control activists.” That's a qualified approval and a far cry from "NRA, Mayors Agree" in the article title.

The NRA statement re "support law enforcement" is precisely relevant to my statement about "aggressively enforce existing laws".

I'm so sorry you have difficulty comprehending what you read.

Have a nice day, :hi:

12. It is not I who is lacking in reading comprehension.
"But they’ve found something they may both support: the Obama administration’s call for full law-enforcement access to data from traces of guns used in crimes."

THAT is what the article is about - it is what the mayors and NRA are in agreement on. The article makes no mention whatsoever about other law enforcement issues.

In fact, the final sentence there is a snark by the NRA spokesman:

Christopher Cox, an NRA spokesman, stopped shy of endorsing the reform but did not oppose it: “While we do not believe any change is necessary, we appreciate the President’s decision to support law enforcement and not gun control activists.”

It is commenting on the widely held, NRA encouraged, erroneous contention that Obama is out to take peoples' guns away at the behest of gun control advocates. Even as he agrees with Obama, Cox couldn't resist being pissy.

But that's OK - I know how at a loss you all feel without your strawmen.

13. I won't confuse you with facts because your mind is made up. I've observed that's a terminal illness
with many who would prohibit pre-existing, inalienable/unalienable rights that government is obligated to protect.

5. While I think we need more control, enforcing the current laws is CRITICAL!
I agree with the NRA on that point. There are a wealth of laws that aren't being enforced to the extent that they should be. This seems like a very reasonable step.

That said, I almost break down in teary-laughter when I hear or read an argument for AK-47's as a hunting weapon. If you can't hit the side of a barn door with a shotgun, you DO NOT BELONG IN THE WOODS WITH A GUN! Who would want to eat something that has 158 rounds embedded in it? There was an old Bloom County on that subject - "I found a hoof!"

7. What does hunting have to do with the right to own a firearm?
Beyond that though, my AR-15 has made an excellent hunting rifle since I purchased it last year.

8. Nothing at all - that's what makes it funny.
I just laugh when someone justifies assault weapons based on their hunting needs - that isn't hunting, that's carpet bombing!

The 2nd Amendment is pretty clear in its intent, but we do have restrictions on weapons - you can't buy a grenade launcher at Dick's Sporting Goods. There are common sense boundaries to that - and I do own guns.

15. Gun.
Next! We need to label whichever of them anything we can that will help get some off the streets. Less availability means fewer deaths. There's way too many guns out there. Hopefully using the tracking info will lead to arrest of less-than-legal suppliers.

14. You seem to be under the mistaken idea..
.. that assault weapons fire any faster than other semi-automatic hunting rifles- as fast or slow as you pull the trigger. Most states require that any gun used in hunting be equipped with a five round magazine.

20. Semi-auto AK-47 clones make great hunting rifles.
Matched with the right game, they have ballistics similar to a .30-30 and are subject to the same 5-round magazine restrictions as every other rifle is in the states that restrict hunting mag sizes (almost all of them). What is the problem with using an AK-47 for hunting? Is it just a problem of ergonomic vs traditional stock shapes?

16. No fishing in NICS, thank you.
If a gun is recovered as part of an investigation, law enforcement is already able to trace that gun to its source. What the tiahrt amendment does is disallow queries like 'who / how many in this zip code have purchased a firearm?' or 'which FFLs are selling the most guns?' - activities that in and of themselves are not indicative of criminal activity.

17. The article specifically says a "partial rollback" -
and that part concerns sharing information with the ATF and federal law enforcement - currently several states use the Tiahrt amendment to NOT share ANY information with the feds.

Fishing expeditions are still disallowed.

18. Let's hope so..
I'd like to see a more exhaustive article on what will / will not be allowed.

The reason for the Tiahrt amendment in part, came about as a direct result of Charles Schumer's 'report' on assault weapons that tried to assert that assault weapons were used in a disproportionate amount of crime based on trace requests- when in actuality, 1) assault weapons were traced more often than other guns because they were unusual, and firearms are traced for non-criminal purposes too (ie, part of a gun buyback, etc.)

19. Any OP that uses "gun" draws posts written by those who are grossly ignorant of the inalienable
right to keep and bear arms for self-defense as proved by repeating mis-truths such as semiautomatic firearms mislabeled assault weapons, private sale of personal property mislabeled gun-show sale, and hunting as a 2nd amendment issue when the 2nd protects the right of self-defense.
