Associated PressKATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — An alliance of 22 political parties claimed Sunday to have enough support to form a new coalition government in Nepal and called for a parliamentary vote to elect its candidate as the new prime minister.
The former prime minister called the move a political conspiracy aimed at derailing a peace process that ended a bloody 10-year insurgency by guerrilla fighters he once commanded.
Parliament speaker Subash Nemwang said the alliance — made up of Nepali Congress, the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist) and smaller groups — filed a claim to form a new government and began the process of putting together an administration.
The alliance said it will back veteran communist leader Madhav Kumar Nepal as prime minister.
The previous coalition government was led by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), which won elections last year but abruptly withdrew from the government this month.
