Pro-gay marriage event on eve of Prop 8 ruling

SAN FRANCISCO—Gay marriage supporters are holding a prayer service on the eve of the California Supreme Court's expected ruling on the legality of a voter-approved ban on same-sex nuptials. The group Marriage Equality USA plans to hold the interfaith event Monday night at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.

On Tuesday morning, the state's high court plans to rule on a series of lawsuits seeking to overturn Proposition 8.

Opponents of the gay marriage ban argue that the issue was improperly put before voters; they say it revised the state constitution's equal protection clause to such a dramatic degree that it first needed the Legislature's approval.

But during a March hearing, several justices appeared skeptical at the idea of overturning a law passed by the voters.

1. Ah, so many laws I want to see overturned...

The rights of women to vote.
The rights of people of another race to marry the one they love.
The rights of people to have their religion, which is a "choice" after all, protected.
The rights of people to own slaves.

Yes, so many rights that will now be up for grabs.

2. If CA upholds this thing, I have a feeling that it will give gay marriage

a boost all over the country, including here. It's one of those times where blatant discrimination will only speed up its own demise, imho. That being said, I hope the Court does the right thing.

4. I don't see how they can possible reverse their earlier ruling...

... and keep any kind of credibility at all. I think at the hearing a couple of months ago, the justices were hoping someone, anyone, would give them some kind of good reason that would allow them a credible reversal of some kind, but they just didn't get it.

The guy that Jerry Brown sent to argue the anti-Prop 8 point of view was practically worthless, but I just can't seem them going back on what they said in In Re: Marriages, constitutional amendment or not, especially in light of what has taken place in other states in the interim.

Given the budget mess here in CA, we already look like The State That Doesn't Know How. If the justices want to contribute to that point of view tomorrow morning, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

But I'm drained. I can no longer hope that common sense prevails in this.

The question wasn't whether gays and lesbians could marry, it was whether the people had the right to change the constitution of their state. If the justices say they do have that power, even though it denies an entire group of people their rights, expect confusion, grief, elation (if they allow those who were married to remain as such, which brings up a whole different issue), and a host of other emotions pouring out of California.

I am 45 years old. I truly hope to live long enough to see ignorance like these amendments laughed at as archaic and gay marriage to flourish throughout the United States.

6. Unfortunately, YOU were right.

The court only addressed the topic of whether or not the voters had the right to invalidate Supreme Court rulings and change their constitution at the drop of a hat and at the slightest whim. The answer would seem to be a resounding "yes".

I wonder how long it will be before they start their inevitable effort to invalidate the marriages that the court ruled are valid.
