UN Agency Calls For Warning Pictures On Tobacco Products

The World Health Organization announced Friday that cigarette packages should incorporate pictures of the results of smoking tobacco, in addition to the written warnings.

The U.N. agency recommended that governments educate people on the health penalties of smoking.

WHO said the majority of countries still do not have the risks of smoking on packages of cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products.

"Health warnings on tobacco packages are a simple, cheap and effective strategy that can vastly reduce tobacco use and save lives," said Dr. Ala Alwan, a senior WHO official. "Warnings that include images of the harm that tobacco causes are particularly effective at communicating risk and motivating behavioral changes, such as quitting or reducing tobacco consumption."

3. No logos

There was a story recently, I can't find it, where there is a group that wants to eliminate all logos and design from packaging save for the skulls and pictures. Just the brand name in generic fonts. Its because tobacco companies are more and more, targeting to children and youth with their 'rad' designs. I like this idea.

Which would Far more than make up for those taxes.

9. A huge chunk of cigarette taxes funds children's health care -

- and children's health care expenses will not be reduced as adults quit smoking because children aren't the impacted group. Taxing something else to fill the gap will be necessary as people quit their smokes and I'm voting for beer as I can't stand the stuff.

10. Include wine and bottled water. I have no use for these either.

We will need more items to tax as the use of each of these reduce. I don't like brussel sprouts, lets tax it for the children. I love asparagus and broccoli, we should leave those alone. I'll have to get back to you about butternut squash, I'm still on the fence about that one. Give me a couple good recipes and I might be able to make up my mind.

I think most people are well aware of the effects of smoking and don't need any more of a guilt trip than they are already getting about being addicted.
