Calif Gay Marriage Supporters Plan March on D.C.

FRESNO (CBS 5) ―

Organizers of a Fresno-based same-sex marriage rally will announce an October march on Washington, CBS5 has learned.

"We are kicking off a national march on Washington…because the person who really has promises he needs to make good on is President Obama," said, Meet in the Middle director Robin McGehee.

During Saturday's ceremony at Fresno City Hall, organizers will unfurl a banner that reads, "March on Washington – Full Equality Now!," said Jon Carroll, spokesman for Meet in the Middle for Equality.

Carroll said the Washington event will take place on the weekend of October 10th and 11th, coinciding with "National Coming Out Day," said Carroll.

3. You do understand how our government(s) work, right?
There are some issues designated for the Federal Government alone, and all others belong to the States. It seems to me that the best use of resources is in those jurisdictions where it can do the most good, and at the moment, California is IT!

5. I think there's too much in the list
for everyone in the country to think about and care about at the moment, and certainly for Prez O. Same with DADT: Clinton was rushed into it, and look what we got.

HOW many issues are we here at DU vitally concerned about? He just CAN'T deal with everything now, we shouldn't expect him to, and we shouldn't complain but recognize his limitations. We SHOULD do our best to get those who think the way we do into every office possible.

6. I don't know how many times I've seen the gay community told that since
Edited on Fri May-29-09 10:16 PM by EFerrari
I've been at DU. Countless times.

And it's funny because by now, I fully never expect anyone to say, NOW is your moment, gay folk

So it's a good thing they've taken matters into their own hands NOW. And I'm happy to join them NOW.

10. Her profile states she lives in (drum roll)...Washington DC!
Maybe she's just trying to discourage us'n gays to stay home so she doesn't have to battle the traffic jams...

Or maybe she works for the federal government -- probably a White House staffer -- I mean, she sure does know how them thar government(s) work and all.

12. Get to the back of the bus gays
Your needs aren't important enough. Your lives don't matter. Maybe if everything under the sun gets taken care of first, including the puppies and the 30K/plate dinners, we can consider your petty little needs. But otherwise STFU and stop whining about the fact that:

It's still perfectly legal to fire people (if they're hired at all) in 30 states just because they're gay.
It's legal in many states to discriminate against gay people with regards to housing.
Gay people can't serve openly in the military and are the subject of witch hunts even when they aren't open about who they are.
Gay people can only marry in a few states, and have pathetic Civil Unions/Domestic Partnerships (which don't come close to Marriage) in another handful of states. We have no federal benefits at all thanks to DOMA.
We have no federal hate crimes protection yet.
We're under constant attack by the RRRW bigots who subject us to persistent vilification, lies, propaganda and work in every way to strip us of those rights we have, prevent us from getting new ones, and all the while pretend they're the victims.

Pardon us if we're frustrated and tired of our "Fierce Advocate" doing absolutely nothing and following through on none of the promises he made prior to his election.

16. And what exactly would it cost Obama to speak up for
Civil Rights for GLBT people? Maybe Rick Warren wouldn't come by and visit. How inconvenient would it be for him to order the Armed Forces NOT to discharge people based on their sexual orientation, and pressure Congress to end DADT? Certainly no more inconvenient for him than for the 200 GLBT folks who have been kicked out of the service since Obama became president. Nobody here is saying that Obama should focus solely on GLBT issues, but with very little effort on his part he could make a big difference in the fight. The fact that he seems unwilling to expend that little bit of effort is worthy of our criticism.

18. "How inconvenient would it be for him to order the Armed Forces NOT to discharge people based on
their sexual orientation..."

Of course, lets ignore for the moment that it would be ILLEGAL for him to give such an order, an order that violates current US Law.

Didn't we have enough of the imperial presidency already?

Complain at him that he should speak out about allowing gays to serve in the military.

Complain at him that he should speak out in opposition to Prop H8.

But he can't do ANYTHING about either one except speak out.

He cannot change the constitution of California. He cannot wave a magic wand an repeal prop H8. Nor can he repeal the ban on gays in the military. What he CAN do is rescind the executive order that established DADT. But if he DID, the military would be free to start witch hunts for gays again, and discharge (dishonorably) any gays that they find. Is that what you want?

Get Congress to change the law. Get the US Supreme Court to rule that marriage rights apply equally to all.

Personally, I wouldn't take the marriage issue to the Supreme Court just yet as it would likely lose, and THEN you would have a devil of a time getting that ruling undone. I would work to put the issue before the voters again and again, encourage everyone to help out. Be positive about it. Yeah, it sucks right now. But time is on your side. And as more time passes and those states that allow gay marriage don't explode into space or something... more people will be on your side.

But that's just my opinion.

17. I don't think this is about prop 8.
He has made a few pretty blatant promises about what he would do as president and he is now not keeping them. I think this protest is about him flat out breaking his word.
