St. John's, Antigua - A senior Caribbean official said on Sunday that Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide told him a during refueling stop he was bound for South Africa.
Aristide, who left Haiti early on Sunday, did not indicate whether he would be flying directly to South Africa, according to the official, who spoke with press on condition of anonymity.
And...
Foreign affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa earlier on Sunday denied any knowledge that Aristide may take asylum in South Africa. "We are not aware of anything related to him (Aristide) coming to South Africa," Mamoepa told press, following speculation that the ousted leader might seek permanent asylum in one of its strongest foreign allies.
Three other Caribbean sources said Aristide would temporarily go to Panama, which offered Aristide temporary asylum, and then on to an African country. But Mario Rognoni, a spokesman for Panamanian President Mireya Moscoso, told press in a phone interview that since midday on Sunday, Panamanian officials have operated under the assumption that Aristide was not coming to Panama.

Normally you'd want the guy saying something, or at least have pictures of him getting off the plane. Unless he's still in the air being 'debriefed' by his handlers. A flight to South Africa would give some time for 'persuasion', no???
