U.S. Arranging 'Elders Council' to Run Haiti
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 10:44 AM by khephra
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States scrambled on Monday to create an interim "council of elders" that would run Haiti, organize early elections and disarm rebels after President Jean-Bertrand Aristide quit under U.S. pressure in the face of a deadly revolt, a U.S. official said.

"There's going to be a tripartite commission, made up of the opposition, the government and the international community, who will form a sort of 'council of elders,"' said a State Department official, who asked not to be named.

Washington was focusing on having Chief Justice Boniface Alexandre, who replaced Aristide after he flew into exile, work with Haiti's Prime Minister Yvon Neptune and "probably" a representative from the Caribbean nations bloc, CARICOM, to form the council of "a dozen eminent Haitians," he added.

Washington, which sent Marines into the country hours after flying Aristide to the Central African Republic, also wanted "to take (the rebels) out of the equation" by regrouping the police force that was overrun in half of Haiti, the official said.

3. Counsel of Elders...... connotations of primitive cultures
dripping out of that terminology. I wonder how many of these 'elders' attended US training?

4. Then there is the voodoo culture, Republicans get into that-
they've given US "voodoo economics", which, really, has always been around, alright.

And of the 12 for a Council of Elders-yes, I wonder how many are US trained and bought. But this whole thing is disinformation right now.
