Caribbean denounces Aristide 'removal'
GeorgieBoy must be having a very trying day  I doubt that the OAS is far behind--according to their Article 21, which states:

The territory of a State is inviolable; it may not be the object, even temporarily, of military occupation or of other measures of force taken by another State, directly or indirectly, on any grounds whatever. No territorial acquisitions or special advantages obtained either by force or by other means of coercion shall be recognized.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, March 1 (UPI) -- The Caribbean Community federation denounced the "removal" of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and held an emergency meeting Monday in Jamaica.

A statement from the group known as CARICOM was issued by Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, who said international pressure on Aristide to flee to the Central African Republic was "a dangerous precedent," the Jamaica Gleaner reported.

"We are bound to question whether his resignation was truly voluntary, as it comes after the capture of sections of Haiti by armed insurgents and the failure of the international community to provide the requisite support, despite the appeals of CARICOM," Patterson's statement said.

"The removal of President Aristide in these circumstances sets a dangerous precedent for democratically elected governments anywhere and everywhere, as it promotes the removal of duly elected persons from office by the power of rebel forces."

1. CARICOM statement full text
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 08:52 AM by Skinner
"President Aristide has submitted his resignation as the President of Haiti and has left the country for an undisclosed destination. We are bound to question whether his resignation was truly voluntary, as it comes after the capture of sections of Haiti by armed insurgents and the failure of the international community to provide the requisite support, despite the appeals of CARICOM.

"The removal of President Aristide in these circumstances sets a dangerous precedent for democratically-elected governments anywhere and everywhere, as it promotes the removal of duly-elected persons from office by the power of rebel forces.

"At no point in time was the CARICOM Action Plan predicated on the unconstitutional removal of President Aristide from office. The Action Plan, endorsed by the international community, was based on the precepts of shared government, binding both President Aristide and the legitimate opposition to specific commitments, which would eventually lead to a political solution in accordance with the Constitution of Haiti and result in a peaceful settlement of the crisis and the promotion of the democratic process.

"Any suggestions therefore that CARICOM was a party to a plan or was in consultation or had subscribed to the removal of President Aristide from Office, as a prior condition, would be in complete contradiction to the long- held CARICOM position that the removal of the constitutionally-elected president by unconstitutional means could not be supported by the CARICOM Community.

11. That was not a post from a new org.
As the original poster, the document is a publication from an intergovernmental organization such as as the CARICOM. These entities do not place their pronunciations and proclamations under some copyrighting scheme.

8. Wow, the statement rebuts assertions by Bush administration!!!
Also, this situation is greating much more media attention than did Venezuala. Makes me very happy!!! I hope the Maxine, Charlie and the democratic nominees keep hammering this because maybe, just maybe, it would lead to revelations about previous coups.

3. Aristide said "He DID NOT RESIGN"
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 05:34 PM by Chicago Democrat
He was kidnapped at gunpoint and put on a plane, with shades down. He had no idea where he was. The US soldiers did not tell him where he was. He is presently surrounded by soldiers. He was smuggled a phone and this is the only way we know now what really happened.

Hear the truth:

6. CARICO's points are very valid, there was a proposal on the table to
include the opposition and the Aristide government in some kind of internationally supervised arbitration....I've heard the arguments against the the Aristide government and the opposition - as has the US and every other government in the Western Hemisphere along with France and the UN. Why no action to find a peaceful resolution? Seems at the least, events were allowed to take a course to crisis.
I find this troubling, to be understated about it.

12. Troubling? Be Afraid, Be very afraid!
The rebels were not just any rebels-they were the same gang trained in the school of the Americas to bring Aristide down the last time! Philippe, Tautin, Chamblan-same gang right wing paras that have been responsable for the murder of hundreds of thousands of Haitians-the truth is not as complex as you might think- Aristide was brought down ten or so years ago and signed a pact with the devil (IMF) to borrow money, "start redistributing wealth from the poor back to the rich and quit trying to implement the programs of the popular movement that brought you to power "(like building health care facilities and redistributing land) The so called rebel forces made a point of damaging the health care facilities to make Haiti totally dependant on _guess who-now they will be a colony yet again. now mostly Aristide did what they (IMF)wanted but he was cut off from the movement and could not implement the programs they wanted so he did have some opposition brewing-This latest flap was over the minimum wage he was insisting on raising it to 96 quornos a day (less than 5 bucks) and IMF wanted it at 36 quornos . it costs more than that to eat. I say that right now, the paras and the marines are quickly murdering every union leader and community organizer they can find and then we will see a Chalabi installed soon and they will have to start all over minus their finest leaders to win their independence again. The only freedom America fights for is to exploit. I have friends who are organizers over there- I haven't got word yet if they live still. Don't let this story die. My friends have died in Chile, in Nicaragua, El Salvador- it is true that movement leaders get corrupted-but WHO DO YOU THINK DOES THE CORRUPTING??? CIA can always find family members who will bend who can be "pressured-The Cabal must be SURE no example can ever be set of freedom from corporate rule. either Bush knows he is going down and wants to grab what he can while he is in or he wants to run so many ventures to prove that he is spreading "freedom" you know for the photo ops-this was so pre planned-headlines everywhwere about the jubiloant capitol what a bunch of BULL

..that's Rumsfeld and his gang of cutthroat thugs. I just finished reading an article on Yahoo news which said that "sure enough, Aristide was surrounded by armed guards where he is being held".
