Leslie Caldwell, who has headed the DoJ's Enron task force since it was set up more than two years ago, is planning to pursue other opportunities in private practice.
She will be replaced by her top deputy, Andrew Weissmann.
The DoJ rushed to quash speculation that Ms Caldwell's departure signalled that the investigation was coming to a close after dozens of prosecutions, including the indictment last month of Jeffrey Skilling, the energy company's former chief executive.
"The task force is by no means winding down," a spokesperson said, noting that new prosecutors had been assigned to its ranks in recent months.
The spokesperson declined to comment on whether Ms Caldwell's pending departure would affect its pursuit of Ken Lay, Enron's former chairman.
