Major news from Mars rover to be announced Tuesday
BY SPACEFLIGHT NOW
Posted: March 1, 2004

Tuesday promises to be a pivotal day in Mars exploration as NASA announces "significant findings" from the Opportunity rover.

-snip-

NASA has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday at 2 p.m. EST (1900 GMT) from agency headquarters in Washington. The event will be carried live on NASA Television.

They are being pretty tight lipped about it.. there's a little more speculation on MSNBC's 'sci-tech' page... I wonder what it is.

Heyo

Liquid water is hard to believe really...but life I'm sure is quite
possible especially underground.
Should be an interesting day.

How about a mudstone layer with wormtracks?

A bloom of microbes in the soil, apparently radiating outward from the sand-blasted remains of a space probe?

which must make Tom DeLay quite uncomfortable.

In other words, definitely no missionaries unless Mars has sentient beings.

14. Damn! Dennis Kucinich was right again! He said Bush wanted

to go to Mars to look for Saddam's WMD. . .

And, sure enough, Bush has found Saddam's WMD on Mars! We will now learn of Saddam's secret space program that carried the WMD out of this world and deposited them on the Red Planet.

Fasten your :tinfoilhat:, folks, bumpy ride ahead.

You know, we really have the wrong government in power in the US to deal with anyone from off planet right now.

Maybe we should put up some big orange 'caution' barrels around the Earth's orbit to warn others off for the time being...

25. True,
can you see that fat-necked Falwell trying to explain how Mars was just a way-station for God's visit to the real deal?

I understand God spoke to Pat Robertson and told him that there was life on Mars so he's arranging to have the 700 Club cabled in. That explains why the Bushco wanted to go there quickly. There's campaign cash to be raised.

Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 09:47 PM by Beetwasher
At the very least I suspect they will certainly announce that there is CURRENTLY water on Mars. I hope that they will announce that they have found strong evidence of microbial life, past or present.

There ARE serious rumors in the scientific community and hints in the articles that they will announce some sort of biological discovery though.

39. Past water
Don't get too excited. I think they are just going to say that they have strong evidence for past water. If they have confirmed that water once flowed on Mars its still a major discovery.

27. It will be, "we aren't sure what we think we don't know....
But we have visual images of something that is not the 'Democrat Super Tuesday Show', that we would like you to watch on the tube all day long, which in the end we are sure will require another mission in ten years, with a robotic pooper scooper and a magnifying glass, to verify what no one can say at this point, for sure one way or another...,but we'd really like to bail the president out on being such a big horse's ass on his support for a manned Mars mission, when everyone knows he thinks Texas is the center of the universe...and we can't justify the expense if there were kangaroos on Mars...ad naseum.

NASA. If they have life, they better just come out and SAY it, because I for one don't appreciate their circus on Super Tuesday. If that is what is up, they have become too politicized and bureaucratic and should be disbanded. I'm a space-nut, but I'm beginning to believe NASA is just another part of the problem.

Smoke and mirrors.

I'd keep that ugly thing under wraps too. Really doubtful if if qualifies for a higher life form. This is one is definitely fake, no doubt about it.

Actually I'm really excited. I hope it is more than just evidence of water. I want life!!!

It would be fantastic if they've confirmed water or even better some indication of microbic life.

How arrogant of anyone to think that our planet is the only place where life exists.

News like I'm hoping for tomorrow, is what makes our trip, through all this crap that we endure, worthwhile.

40. I recall a debate here on DU about the mud-like appearance
of the trail that had been created when the lander first dragged its fabric along the surface, in the process of initial setup. It looked like mud then, which generally requires water here on earth. Evidence of actual life, especially life that is still living (as opposed to only fossil indications), would be mind blowing.

Gay marriage is EXPLICITLY forbidden, as is the Democratic party.

Ownership of calico cats, surprisingly, is not forbidden (sorry, John...)

Corporate wealth is encouraged, but in the main only when people with darker shaded skin are harmed.

Abortion is clearly defined as a mortal sin, and the decisions of Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia in any case brought to them are exalted as, "conducted directly from the mouth of God, verily I say it." R2D2 36 : 9
