Old law gives DeLay new trouble

Texans for a Republican Majority was U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's statewide political operation, a committee that played a fast and loose, Washington style of campaign funding.

The committee won legislative victories in Austin that reflected glory on the Sugar Land Republican and enhanced his political power in Washington. Now, Texans for a Republican Majority may become DeLay's political bane.

Travis County prosecutors, using a law first passed in 1907, are investigating whether DeLay's operatives committed a felony by breaking the only major restriction on campaign finance in Texas -- a ban on using corporate or labor union money to influence elections.

DeLay helped create Texans for a Republican Majority and raised most of the corporate money in question, but his aides portray him as little more than a figurehead in the committee's operations. They also contend any spending of corporate money was for legitimate administrative expenses allowed under state law.

DeLay doesn't represent much of anybody. But he doesn't have to. He owns them. His power is such that he can in an instant destroy the political career of any Republican in Texas, up to and including the Governor. That power may also extend to Democrats - we'll see what happens to Martin Frost in November.

2. Maybe We're Seeing The Ghosts Of Progressives Past?

The thought of Tom DeLay being brought down by a law passed back in the days of Theodore Roosevelt and the original Progressive movement would be truly fine irony, and well worth contemplating. I would very much savor the ironies.

Of course, I'd long thought that Tom DeLay's and George UU Bush's GOP had not only turned its back on whatever reformist impulses the GOP once entertained since Herbert Hoover's inauguration but more recently, as each and every new George Dubya Bush administration initiative unfolded, each and every reformist tradition the GOP had since William McKinley's assasination.

3. They don't call it "doing bidness" in Texas for nothing

We all know that DeLay has been pushing more than the envelope, he's been extremely greedy and he's even acted like an extortionist demanding money for a seat at his table. "You gotta pay DeLay to play"

The truth is we (TX) have the weakest finance ethics rules in the country, so as much as I want this scandal to bring DeLay and TRMPAC, and TAB down, the best I think we're going to get is maybe more rules. These creeps always get away. I thank Ronnie Earle and Texas for Public Justice for trying though. Sometimes just shining light on the slimy creatures gets them to scatter.

Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.

Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee.
