The U.S. Department of Homeland Security turns 1 year old today. Headed by Tom Ridge, the mammoth department responsible for protecting the United States against terror attacks, consists of 180,000 employees from combined government agencies.
A former two-term Pennsylvania governor, Ridge was sworn in as the first director of the Office of Homeland Security in October 2001, following the tragic events of 9/11.
Peter Jennings spoke with Ridge to get an appraisal of the department's first year. The following is an excerpt of that interview:
