Poll: Kerry Would Beat Bush* in Conn. (His Home State!!!)
A University of Connecticut poll shows that President Bush would lose the state to Massachusetts Senator John Kerry if the election were today.

Kerry, who is leading the race for the Democratic nomination, would beat the Republican president by 49 percent to 36 percent. The poll shows independent candidate Ralph Nader winning three percent.

Eight percent are undecided.

If Senator John Edwards of North Carolina wins the presidential nomination, the polls shows a dead heat between him and Bush. Each would receive 38 percent.

(snip)

Four years ago, then-Vice President Al Gore won Connecticut with 56 percent of the vote.

2. 3%!?
3% voting for Nader the Enabler is not good news. And Kerry getting less than Gore isn't particularly encouraging either.

3. how is it possible that Nader can be getting 3% of the vote
It just boggles the mind. Are people actually thinking they would rather have Bush for 4 more years than vote for the Dem. candidate? That seems irresponsible and selfish considering the misery he has wrought.

8. Maybe people would like a real choice?
A choice between jobs and NAFTA; between peace and war; between liberty and the police state; between democracy and corpocracy.

At heart, Bagnana, they'd like to vote for a candidate who didn't cravenly support Bush's key domestic and foreign policies. An independent-minded candidate who showed courage in the face of the Bush onslaught - and not someone who merely folded before it. They want a candidate who led the charge against the corporate crime wave and attack after attack against Bush policies. Not someone who merely sat there voting for the dismantling of our liberties, the gutting of our treasury, and the violation of international law.

Really, now, is that too much to ask? What boggles the mind is that in the face of the Bush menace, the party would settle for as bland an accomodationist as Kerry.

9. A False Choice
Each voter can only agree 100% of the time with themselves. But we don't all vote for ourselves. Why? Because getting elected, getting things done, is more important. We do not live in Pangloss' best of all possible worlds, we live in the real world, where compromise is necessary and absolutism is the road to ruin. You cannot make the best the enemy of the good.

11. To quote what is considered hard-left (Chomsky):
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 01:00 AM by tinnypriv

"I plan to vote against Bush, and the only way to do that will be to press the lever for the Democratic candidate, presumably Kerry. No one should delude themselves into believing that they are taking a stand on principle if they help grant another mandate to the radical statist reactionaries around Bush -- unless the principle they adhere to is dismantling what remains of the progressive achievements of a century of popular struggle at home, and consequences internationally and for the future that we don't have to dwell on." (emphases added) - Feb 29 2004.
Vote Nader, get Bush.

What a campaign slogan! :eyes:

28. What choice
How does voting for Nader/Bush stop any of those bad things. Bush is the one implementing the police state, Bush is the most pro-corporate president ever, the most pro-"free trade" ever. How does voting for Nader and keeping Bush in power help any of those things?

People may want a VIABLE candidate who "led the charge against the corporate crime wave" but Nader is not viable. Those who want to vote for a non-viable candidate are only sending the message that a) they don't want to make any effort to do anything about these things in the 3 1/2 years in between elections (just like their hero Nader) and b) that they'd rather see Bush as president than a Democrat.

23. In a university poll, maybe many of the respondents were university...
staff and students. This would probably skew the data vis a vis Nader
(the traitor).

On the other hand, anyone who believes the Nader candidacy will have no impact, are in denial over the disgruntlement many of us feel given the FACT that many of our Democrat politicians are slopping from the same trough as the GOP!

I am ABB...Kerry, I guess, will do. But if we win this fall, something needs to be done to drag our Party back to it's roots. We should be the Party of People, not the party that lets its' leader sign Naftaa and gut Welfare, which Clinton DID!

'Only Nixon could go to China', and only a Democrat could gut Welfare! I am sick of the 'good cop/bad cop' routine the two established parties and their corporate sponsors have been running for a generation on the American People!

Make no mistake-Nader is more of a threat than many would like to believe, but whose fault is that?

24. There are people who are not happy that their candidate..
didn't make it during the primary process who would do it out of spite. Many on DU who supported other candidates are threatening to vote for Nader to spite the Democrats. I am sure that the "spite" factor will be considerably less by November.

4. Most Americans believe Junior is a native Texan!
So, I'd really be interested in knowing which candidate polls higher in the Lone Star state...rather than in the Nutmeg state.

(Besides, Junior has a distinct Texas faux drawl that can't possibly be confused with New England.)

Repugs are shocked.

Grade inflation began in '65 ... at Yale. A direct reaction to the VietNam war. Guess who "earned" barely-passing grades in an era where successful breathing garnered at least a B-?

Remember the Rev. William Sloane Coffin?

16. Yes, but
it was Texas where, for better or worse (well, worse), he left his mark.

Thus, voters identify him as a Texan.

In this respect, and this respect alone, he is just like Clark, who was born in Illinois, but is now identified as an Arkansan.

He moved to Arkansas when he was two, if I recall correctly. Bush moved to Texas after graduating from college.

MIDLAND, TEXAS - The overall budget for the restoration, development and perpetual operation of the 1950s George W. Bush Childhood Home: A Presidential Site in Midland has been fixed at $7 million, according to Bill Scott, president of the project's board of directors.

22. No, you have that wrong
From the article:

The poll was based on a sample of 448 registered voters in Connecticut and the margin of sampling error was plus or minus four percent.

The only mention of Massachusetts is that they make sure we know that John Kerry is a Senator from there. The poll was conducted in Connecticut, of Connecticut voters, by a Connecticut university, with regards to the election in Connecticut.
