The ingredients of Coca-Cola are, as every schoolchild knows, one of the world's best-kept secrets. Even subcontractors who bottle the stuff are kept in the dark, in order to preserve the mystique of The Real Thing.

The same cannot be said, however, about Dasani, the Coca-Cola Company's latest foray into the British bottled water market.

It comes from the tap. In Sidcup, to be precise.

in my neck of the woods is so bad, I have no choice but to use bottled water. The tap tastes like ash mixed with tires. I hate Dasani, but I usually go for Vittel or Dannon.

But there is also pollution, and other issues, that keep many municipalities from having good tasting, clean tap-water.

In the mid 1980s, I visited a pal in SF, and *no one* drank tap water, they said it was gross.

There are some towns where there's no public system and you're on a well, and if there happens to be a farm near you, you may very well buy bottled water or filter.

Some places have higher standards than others. When I graduated & we sold our house, it was required that we get a water report via full testing.

READ the label! This is not news, or it shouldn't be anyways. Good for them. They sold it. People bought it. It was right on the label all the time. At 5c an ounce, they made way more $$$$ than on any other "product." They're still laughing.

Plus, I heard that they Ionize the water somehow and it actually makes you thirsty when you drink it. Not sure if this is true, but for some reason I'm inclined to believe it.

very good due to a lack of many essential minerals. Using Britta filter pitchers (charcol mix) even improves the flavor and helps remove possible lead impurities.

11. The irony is that it's not pure

The result: almost totally pure H2O.

The problem is that it is very boring H2O.

Solution: having gone to the trouble of taking everything out, put three other other things back into it - calcium, magnesium and sodium bicarbonate. Apparently, Dasani tastes nicer that way, while still being "as pure as bottled water gets".

ie it's all marketing bullshit. This stuff is more expensive than British petrol!

This is the German brand of "table water" owned by Coca Cola and IIRC, market leader. Just ordinary tap water with added salt and carbon dioxide.

Market it as an upmarket product and the chances are you will find a few fools who think that drinking the stuff gives them an ahem, "aspriational lifestyle".

26. You pay *more* for them to *leave out* the high-fructose corn syrup,

which is bad for you, and some flavorings that give the "Coke" taste (not including cocaine since before our lifetimes, though.)

I knew HFCS was now the sweetener of choice for the corporate boys because it is ridiculously cheap. . . but how insanely cheap could it be, how insanely cheap can the flavorings be, to make them cheaper than water?

Other types of sugar (not quite as cheap) are used; Corn Syrup is unusual in Europe. For that reason everything tastes different: chocolate, coke, Pepsi, ...

The price is pure marketing, it's probably far more expensive to get the water to a supermarket, than to produce / filter it.

comes from the San Antonio municipal water supply. It is straight tap water. 63 cents a gallon, but the regular tap water here in Taylor sucks. The ice is good for tea and pop.

28. Ironically, TIB, Coca Cola, which, of course, is headquartered in Atlanta,

used to have bottling plants around the state and the glass bottles had the city name stamped in the glass on each bottle's bottom. Thus it was possible to know its location of origin and the bottling plant in Rome, Georgia, was said to have the best Coke in the state, because of a certain full-bodied tang the Rome-bottled Cokes had that came from their local water supply.

Conoisseurs would sip a newly opened Coke and comment "Now that's a good Rome Coke!" or "Hmm, not a Rome Coke." And the name on the bottom of the bottle would be used to check their tasting skills.

Then Coke closed all the branch bottling plants, putting people out of work, and ending the Rome Coke forever. I can't remember the last time I saw a Coke in a glass bottle, either. Kids used to be taken on field trips to Coca Cola bottling plants; I was taken on one in Charleston, S.C. in kindergarten, and again in 4th grade in Manila, Philippines. It was a pretty interesting factory tour and they also gave everyone a sample Coke and some souvenirs. I still have my tiny case of miniature Cokes, each removable from its case, from Charleston, and a key chain from Manila. No more field trips to the local bottling plant when the plant shuts down.

I'm a member of the Campaign for Real Ale, and if there is one thing the beer boffins keep telling me it's that the impurities in the water are what help to bring out the taste. It's the reason I'm always given as to why a certain brewery local to me produces terrible beer (although there are other very good breweries operating close by who must be using the same water supply)

Even their own CAMRA liason officer has written articles in the local press slagging them off.

I should add that the Felstar brewery in Felstead produces some very nice wheat beers that are well worth trying, and Crouch Vale and Mighty Oak are very good breweries too. The only problem with Essex beer is the crap produced by Ridleys.
