State Attorney General Paul W. Summers will be asked to appear before the state Senate to explain a controversial resolution aimed at amending the Tennessee Constitution to restrict abortions.
The request was made by Sen. Rosalind Kurita, D-Clarksville, last night after the resolution was read to the Senate. Summers is expected to appear on Thursday or early next week and the resolution may be voted on the same day.
The proposed amendment by state Sen. David Fowler, R-Signal Mountain, would state that the Tennessee Constitution cannot provide greater abortion rights than those provided by the U.S. Constitution, as interpreted by the U.S. Supreme Court.
If the high court's Roe vs. Wade abortion decision, which established the right to an abortion, is ever overturned, the amendment would clear the way for the state legislature to outlaw abortions in Tennessee.http://www.tennessean.com/government/archives/04/02/47634664.shtml?Element_ID=47634664
