Mystery of ferry missing (No bodies found)

Mariveles - The fate of 134 people missing from a burnt-out ferry in the Philippines remain a mystery Tuesday after rescuers found no bodies or survivors inside its half-submerged hulk, the coastguard said.

Coastguard chief Vice Admiral Arturo Gosingan said salvage teams had nearly finished inspecting the bowels of the Superferry 14, which was consumed by flames after an explosion in Manila Bay on Friday.

He said the coastguard now hoped the missing passengers had been rescued by fishing vessels that responded to the ferry's distress call but had not bothered to report back to the authorities.

"We already made a half-sweep and 70 percent of the ship has been searched," Gosingan told AFP. "There are no signs of life, but there are also no dead bodies. So far we only found debris."

Report: ASG claims responsibility for Superferry 14 blaze

The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) claimed responsibility Sunday for a deadly high seas blaze that left 165 people missing and one confirmed dead, Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) reported.


A news report by RMN cited ASG spokesman Abu Sulaiman as claiming that Friday's explosion was an act of revenge for government attacks in the southern Mindanao area. ASG has often called the radio network in the past.


Superferry 14 caught fire Friday shortly after it left Manila for Bacolod and was passing Corregidor island on the mouth of Manila Bay.
