Washington -- San Francisco has ignited a "wildfire" of same-sex
marriages across the country that must be stopped by amending the
U.S. Constitution, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist declared
Wednesday in prelude to a Senate hearing to explore doing just that.

The hearing was packed with lesbians and gays with children as
witnesses declared that activist judges and renegade mayors are
sending traditional marriage into a tailspin, creating a "legal
domino effect'' that will force the entire nation to accept
same-sex marriages barring a last stand by changing the nation's
founding document.

"Same-sex marriage is likely to spread through all 50 states in
coming years," Frist said. "We're going to act."

Frist's warning came as lesbian and gay couples lined up to wed in
Portland, Ore., after a Multnomah County commissioner followed San
Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's decision three weeks ago to issue
marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The mayors of New Paltz and
Nyack in New York also vowed to issue licenses, despite a warning
by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer that state law prohibits
same-sex marriages.

Wouldn't you think we should be encouraging this instead of trying to ban it through the Constitution?

I have changed my mind on this over the past few weeks. I was in favor of "civil unions" for same-sex couples but now I feel they are entitled to the same legal rights that I have. They are entitled to have the city/town government issue them a license and join in a legal union the same as a "traditional" couple. My legal union is no different than theirs. If I then decide to have a church bless the marriage I expect to follow that church's guidelines. But the legal issue should not take gender into consideration when bestowing married status on a couple.

Religion should play NO part in the state's issuance and acknowledgement of a marriage.

My two cents. And, as a disclaimer, I've been married to the same guy for almost 30 years now.

Gay couples getting married would argue against their caricature of gays as being uncaring, promiscuous libertines who deserve to be treated badly and get aids.

If the majority started seeing gay people as having the same needs and desire for commitment and social recognition as all other humans, they might {gasp} start seeing them as the individuals they are instead of the stereotyped evil the right wingers try to portray them as being. That would be one less diversion from the tremendous harm the neocon agenda is doing to our culture. One less tool taken out of their pysch-ops of crowd manipulation gimmicks.

more and more places, like San Francisco and Portland, will decide to do this, not based on a judges ruling, but on the decisions of elected leaders. And then we can't blame "judicial activism' any more. There was no judicial activism in San Francisco or Portland, just officials responding to the People. It's easy to get an amendment through against 'evil judicial activists' but once democracy starts taking effect, once elected officials start making decisions, they risk having the feds overrule the decisions of the people. and that is a lot harder to sell.
