Kerry Lags Behind Bush in Fund Raising

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) is a whopping $100 million behind President Bush (news - web sites) in ready cash as he embarks on the next phase of his White House campaign, and dependent on outside groups he can't legally control to help close the gap.

At the same time, Kerry's aides say he brought in a record $1.2 million over the Internet in less than 24 hours after locking up the Democratic presidential nomination with a near-sweep of the Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses.

They cite that as evidence the Massachusetts senator can raise additional millions quickly and compete financially with Bush through this summer's political conventions. Federal spending restrictions take effect for the general election campaign in the fall.

Kerry himself sounded like a man scrapping for every last dollar on Wednesday.

"George Bush has about $200 million and he's going to start advertising tomorrow," he told an audience in Orlando, Fla. "We need to be able to answer him," he added, appealing for donations of "$10, $20, $50, $100." Federal law allows donors to contribute up to $2,000 to an individual candidate.

1. This Deaniac has just signed on to $25 a month
for Kerry. I figure if I can do that for Dean I should do that for Kerry now that he is/will be the candidate.

My wallet's still feeling the hurt from my Clark donations, but I will bring it back to life for the GE.

3. "And In Other News, The Sky's Green, 2 -1 = Fish, etc, etc"
At least according to Bush's ad wizards (Bob Sombersby puts that to rest).

4. BORG JOURNALISM! ("Resistance to Bush is futile...")
All we need is one million people who hate Bush and can afford to part with $100. Problem solved--mainly because it doesn't really exist.

5. No Shit!
This just in: Neil Armstrong becomes the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. That's it for the late news. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

6. Exactly!
"Kerry lags behind Bush in fundraising."

Why not this headline: "According to recent studies, the sun will set on the east coast this evening."

9. Is the $2000 Limit for the Entire Election Cycle?
Or is it separate for primaries and general elections?

12. Kerry does not need more money than bush
His message is so on target and presents so much more than the bush regime that money is a moot point. The message will carry Kerry.

13. He doesn't need more money than Bush
nor is he going to get more. Republicans almost always outraise Democrats by wide margins.

But he needs to remain somewhat competitive with fundraising.

You say his message can win. I agree. But he needs money to get that message out. And he needs it fast.

Maybe money should be a moot point, but alas it isn't.

14. Kicking this to the main page
To convince those who haven't given yet to give our man the edge he needs, though Bush may destroy himself just fine.

11. Bush is freakin' out,...
,...ABB is at least a step away from the plague of Bushites. Ralph Nader will only further galvanize people (contrary to all those fear-mongers *LOL*) by volunteering the FACTS that everyone else is too fearful to lay on the table. Embrace ole' Ralphie, folks,...encourage him and support his opportunity to be the very valuable wild card worth great points against this evil military corporate regime. His interest is sincere and wholesome,...and embracing him right now would be the "right" thing to do. Let me put it to you this way,...he IS on the side of the American people. He will do everything to serve their interests in a "reasoned" way. Trust the process, have faith in humanity.
