Bush can 'go to hell', says Zimbabwe minister
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 03:36 PM by dArKeR
Zimbabwe's information minister has dismissed new United States sanctions that target him and other members of President Robert Mugabe's ruling party, saying "imperialist" Washington could go to hell, a newspaper said on Thursday.

"These Americans who are pontificating about human rights and democracy would not recognise these things even if they hit them on their faces. So go and tell the imperialist to go to hell," Information Minister Jonathan Moyo was quoted as saying in Thursday's edition of the state-run Herald daily.

The United States on Tuesday said it was widening an existing sanctions regime against Zimbabwe to include seven government-related businesses.

The State Department said the sanctions will apply to commercial farms "seized" by Moyo; Zimbabwe Defence Industries, a state-owned arms maker and M&S Syndicate, a holding group owned by the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF).

I read this post and thought, "Sounds like another U.S.-backed coups is in the works."

2. The sad truth is that he's right
(I hate it when the Busheviks make Tyrannical swine like these look good by being right -- I long for the days when foriegn complaints were much more groundless, instead of right on the nose)

Zimbabwe and Mugabe are screwed up Tyrants, too, and I suppose it takes one to know one.

It is a sad day when the complaints of Tyrants about our semi-free nation have more truth than the vast majority of the lying pronouncements of the Busheviuks who (hopefully temporarily) rule this nation.

4. Were they actually more groundless in the past
Or were we simply more competent at covering up our misdeeds.

9. That is a good question
I'm sorry to say (but I gotta call it like I see it) that what you say is true. I would express it like this: "It is easier for the American People to tolerate and accept things like Chile 1972 and Iran 1953 when we were still free with a Free Press and a relatively trustworthy voting system post-WWII. Further, the exigencies of the Cold War, in which we DID face off against ruthless Communists, not only provided some cover for Foreign Policy misdeeds but also some compelling rationale that backing some terrible things was necessary to prevent even worse things, such as nuclear war or the USA going Commie.

"Given the demise of the Soviet Union, the Attempted Coup of 1998 and the Bloodless Coup of 2000, not only are these exigencies and rationales gone, but it is rapidly becoming clear that at this point in history the Busheviks regard the Imperial Subjects of Amerika with only marginally less contempt than they do for Haitians, Salvadorans, frenchmen, or Iraqis. With that comes the importation of tactics once only practiced exclusively in foreign lands, such as wide-scale vote tampering, propganada methods and other things which can be found in CIA-man Ed Luttwak's declassified manual on Coup D'Etat, which can be clearly seen in the Bushevik tactics used in Florida 2000."

This, therefore is not an easy question to answer given the Soviet Threat of the 1980s, exaggerated or not. Even with today's weakened and parsitized media, the sheer number of information outlets today I think makes it more difficult to cover up misdeeds, even as it becomes more Pravda-like, because the true story seems to squeeze out somewhere.

5. Like in Iraq, sanctions will hurt the poor more than the rich
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 04:26 PM by Barkley
Some argue that sanctions helped the the Baathist Party tighten its grip on power. For sure the common Iraqis were hurt the most by UN/US sanctions.

Sanctions did not remove Hussein from power.

Sanctions certainly haven't removed Castro from Cuba, Kim Jong-il from North Korea or led to regime change in Iran.

U.S. sanctions against Haiti did not remove Aristide but made the situation much more precarious. Again, the poorest people felt the impact of U.S. sanctions the most.

On the flip side, the Arab Oil embargoes did not get the U.S. to change its support for Israel. If anything we went too far in support of Israeli policy.

7. While those who speak out against our pontificating about human
rights and democracy might well be taught a lesson, I suspect most of the world is sick of our pontificating and is chilled by the ruthless killing and maiming efficiency of our advanced multi-trillion dollar weapons system.

8. Is it me or does Bush* bring out the potty-mouths
in people? Chavez, Castro, and Moyo; and probably others. I wonder if it would be easier to make a list of all those who haven't insulted chimpy at one point or another.
