Fox News' "Glenn Beck" loses advertisers
Source: BBC

Wed Aug 12, 2009 9:00pm EDT

NEW YORK (Nielsen Business Media) - Some of the nation's biggest advertisers are distancing themselves from Fox News host Glenn Beck after he called President Obama a racist during a July 28 broadcast.

Geico has pulled its ads from Fox News Channel's "The Glenn Beck Program." Lawyers.com, which is owned by LexisNexis, also has vowed not to advertise during the program, according to Color of Change, an African-American online political organization that has been urging advertisers to stop supporting the show.

Additionally, Procter & Gamble, Progressive Insurance and SC Johnson all said their ad placements during the broadcast were made in error and that they would correct the mistake.

The controversy stems from Beck's comment that President Obama is a "racist" with "a deep-seated hatred for white people."

Geico spent more than a half-billion dollars on ads last year, according to the Nielsen Co. It spent more than a quarter-billion dollars in the first half of 2009.

109. AC is also an ignorant, irrelevant, crank skank, demon seed
heifer from the bowels of hell.

Beck is so far down on my list, he isn't on my list. I paid no attention to him when he haunted CNN and absolutely no attention to ANYONE, least of all him, on Faux. I do not watch anything or anyone on Faux News as I am not compelled to view lies and stupidity on a regular basis. I just can't do it; it's too much.

In fact, the only Fox Channels I watch are on a sporadic basis, like when they play a Paul Newman movie that I like on the Fox Movie Channel and, for muckraking frivolity, the local Fox channel because it airs TMZ and The Wendy Williams Show, both of which I often miss, although I only watch the first 10 or so minutes of TWWS. Total weekly cumulative viewing time for Faux Networks is, at most, an hour and a half, and I try not to watch even that much, because I want the Viewer monitors to record only negligible viewer minutes from my receiver for Faux Networks.

18 months ago he was complaining about the healthcare system. now he's all for it. typical repug bullshit.

i bet beck is running scared right now because of all the sponsors jumping ship. hopefully they'll terminate the fool's contract. he's such an asshole.

5. when Beck gets ratings but those don't translate into dollars, the network very much cares

This is great news - and I encourage those who know how to edit videos to put together more video montages of sponsor's logos over Beck's hateful stirrings because it is truly the sponsor who is giving him the mic to say these things and they should be given the full spotlight.

14. Of course they did
Gee, not too hard to see the math here. If it went to other shows, then what happened to the existing advertisers of those other shows? The network will simply not give a show airtime if there are no advertisers.

I would love to see advertisers pull out because of "Hate speech" not just because of racism (yes, I know that racism is a form of hate speech), so even the ardent supporters can't claim, "Oh look what happens when you say something bad about the president"

And all of his followers would say that this was proof that the Obama administration is suppressing free speech.
You cannot win an argument with these people with logic, reason, compassion, or pragmatizem...If you point out what they are doing they just accuse you of it.
The only way we can win is through unity and asserting ourself in a calm and reasoned way....but being just as determined to change things as they are to keep them the same.

50. If Fox earns nothing carrying Beck it means they are the ones saying Obama is a racist.
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 10:46 AM by peacetalksforall
If they pay his salary from the advertisment income, and they don't have it, it meansthey are pulling it from their own money(in essence). It means they should be the target of the vitriol as well as the person who delivers for them.

Corporate tv aids and abets and runs their own campaignes to instill hate in this country.

It isn't just Fox. Sadly, there are 7 of them if you break down GE.

Time-Warner, Murdoch, GE, Disney, Viacom, and many sub-corporations.

Beck can be fired at any minute and Fox will carry on the same sponsorship of hate crimes.

They are supposed to be responsible for bringing some news, educational analysis, and some dignity to the country. They don't deliver.

97. If Fox earned a zillion dollars on Beck, they are still wrong to air a racist. They know
he was wrong. They tried to disassociate themselves from his words, but a network cannot disassociate itself from the words of its show host if the network retains him. The words may just as well be hung around Murdoch's neck.

126. I never watch Fox, never!
I don't want to add to their ratings and I hate them.

Some of my friends say they watch them to here what they are saying, I don't want to hear them. They can put a negative tone to my day.

When I am in a store, bank anywhere and they have on FOX I ask them why do they choose such a controversial station.

I will walk and and go elsewhere.

I told Well Fargo that I would change my acct. if they keep that on .

Not because of me but they had it changed when I came in the next time.

I think FOX was promoted so much as "the network" for Bush News and now they have a hold on companies and viewers.

Challenge whenever you see it and see what we get. : )

Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 05:35 AM by No Elephants
The bad news: FOX did not lose any money.

"A Fox representative noted that Geico is dropping its ads from the show but was quick to note that it was shifting dollars to other programs. "The advertisers referenced have all moved their spots from Beck to other programs on the network, so there has been no revenue lost," the rep said."

So, you may want to let them know you approve of the company's ceasing to advertise on Glenn Beck's show, but you are disappointed that they continue to advertise on FOX News, a network that dedicates a majority of its air time to distorted information, or worse, and to hate mongering.

17. So they shifted money to one of those spots that wasn't sold? When there's
a black screen for 30 seconds where the commercial would have played if anyone had bought it?

This is bullshit damage control - they're afraid that if we succeed in pushing advertisers to drop sponsorship of 1 show, then it'll be even easier for us to push a boycott of the entire network.

know for certain whether Fox would risk lawsuits from even 1 huge company, let alone 5 huge companies. (And, candidly, neither do you.)

Anything is possible, I guess, but I don't think that's likely. We'll see if there is a retraction in the near future.

Meanwhile, I don't think what I suggested would do any harm to any Democratic cause, or to anyone who contacts any of those companies.

33. But Not UPS
UPS is still paying him - they told me so the other day:

Thank you for your e-mail regarding our recent advertising. We value your input and take your comments very seriously.

UPS is very sensitive to the type of television programming with which we associate our messaging. While our advertising schedules are purchased months in advance, we work with our agencies to monitor programming for offensive, inappropriate or controversial content as our schedules run. We do not, however, always have complete visibility into which programs will be promoted in purchased shows.

Occasionally, our advertising ends up near polarizing content. If we find that this becomes a consistent pattern, we will re-evaluate our commitment to particular programs or networks.

Please contact us if you need any additional assistance.

39. what took them so long
I begged CNN to get rid of Beck for years. I stopped going to my health club because I couldn't stand to see him on the monitors. He's the worst of American stupid evil, and that's saying something. I can't get my head around the idea Beck calling Obama racist was the key thing. Who consumes this stuff? Is America *still* Reaganistically deliberately dumbing itself down even though we've lost our empire thanks to that? At first it was to stay blind to the blood paying for our false privileges while gorging at the trough, and now it's a habit of mind as our happy world falls apart?

Is it just that executive floors of corporations don't hear how appalled and disgusted the rest of us are at what they're serving?

I don't get it.

This was reported on Olberman last night. He sat with a guy who had a Nancy Pelosi mask on then pretended to drink wine with her noting that her's was poison.

I was appalled! The guy is just WAY OVER THE LINE.

53. I just called Apple - they won't 'log' your complaint unless you are 'in their system' - sickening

They admitted they advertise on Fox but acted like they don't know where the actual ads go - puuuh lease - they have it down to a science where the ads go. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I'm now officially delaying getting my new computer and was a couple days away from it. If they don't come forward and do the right thing, II can stick with used computers from Craig's list which don't benefit apple if I have to. Heck, in this economy I can probably get what I wanted for a song.

In the past two years, we've bought from Apple:
- Seven iPod nanos (four were gifts to first-time Apple product users)
- An iPod touch
- Two iPhones

This fall, a new iMac for CMW's business.

Further, most of my friends in the European/US arts/design community are Mac users. I will inform them about how to use their accounts to stop HATE SPEECH.

52. AN ANALYSIS IS NEEDED
I strongly suspect that the FOX cable channel is the most reliable source of false and misleading information on TV. I really hope someone, perhaps a research group at a university, will analyze major sources of information, starting with TV, to verify or refute my perception of FOX. This is information the public urgently needs.

and wonder if you are one of those from another site that made it their purpose a week or so ago, to come here to DU and disrupt things...while at the same time, ignoring what they themselves are saying and doing? it seems to me that the other site uses the terms nazi, unamerican, quite liberally...in fact...some of them have even stated point blank, that all DUers are "treasonous rat bastards"...in their everyday rants and anti-Obama, anti-health care reform speech...seen lots of hate being spewed there..in fact almost every thread is anti this or that...while encouraging people to arm themselves and show them(us) who's boss...They and Chuck Norris that is..

In fact..I find your comment as follows, strange....

"I believe that the attacks on Glen Beck are as unfair as the attacks by those the left saying those who oppose the Health Care Bill are Un-American, Nazis or part of Hate groups, etc."

That sounds like something someone from the right would say....ARE you dreaming, or are you awake? Where do you get your information?..because I can guarantee you...that the RIGHT, including Beck and his ilk...are inciting physical violence...and there are others out there, who are sending inflamatory emails with actual instructions as to how to disrupt the town hall meetings, and stating that Obama will be assassinated within 12 months and for those who feel the same to celebrate in private but mourn in public, so no one will know who feels how...but that's ok????????????.....yet you find fault with the left for reacting???

You say you are a Democrat, so tell me then....why is it ok when the other side does whatever, but the Democrats are expected to kowtow at all times, and not fight back...what? the right afraid of our power when we do?? Tell me this...how many of those who are ranting and raving against the health reform bill have read it?? Those old people getting up and screaming they want their country back...ARE most likely using MEDICARE...so they don't even know what they are ranting against...only that one of these guys they see on TV...told them they should rally, rant and rave...so they did..but I bet you...IF you notified them all that you were taking their MEDICARE away from them...you would see them change their tune right quick like...

IF you are so concerned about where the Democratic party is headed...make sure you join your local chapter and work for change...wb

Of the one or two progressive mainstream voices we had on TV in past, if any of them had even INADVERTENTLY used that term, they would have had to issue an on-air apology. Where are the advertisers that are squeamish about his throwing the term "Nazi" around?

He has a right to say what he wants... but sponsors have the right to not fund hate speech, and his employers have a right to can his insane ass.

91. the right wing has laid a trap for the left (as we try to be true to the Constitution)
Recall the Bush admin
- we could not question the leader - the Dixie Chicks and countless others were threatened, lost their jobs, removed from the airways
- we were ridiculed and called unpatriotic if we suggested a different route than the repugs were taking
- people like Dan Rather lost their jobs for reporting more accurately than the becks and o'reilly's of the world
- result: many dead soldiers, many dead civilians, a demolished economy

Now that we have the power
- the repugs are back to spreading their lies publicly
- intimidating our leaders and speakers
- insulting the President, calling him names, inciting violence towards him
- Result: repugs are using tactics to destroy legislation that will help tens of millions

Why do we waste our time fighting among ourselves to give rights to repug morons who do not defend us when they are in power. The argument - well we are no better than them is bullshit. The gop wants power and our approach to silence ourselves, or get mad at lefters who are sick of the repug bullshit - will only give it back to them.

99. Yes, the First Amendment does distinguish between truth and lies, at least
when you lie about a person. The First Amendment has never protected slander or libel, but there are limits to liability for slander and libel when a public figure is involved. Still, to say Obama, who had a white mother and was raised by white grandparents, hates white people, might fit the description of libel, even of a public figure.

100. Beck has no First Amendment rights against FOX, the public or advertisers, only
against the government. Listeners can complain, advertisers can drop him and FOX can fire him. The gubbamint can't jail or fine him, though. But Obama may have a libel case, even though he is a public figure. That statement is so patently untrue that malice is indicated, IMO. If I were a juror, I'd find for Obama.

I'm writing to inform you that I will no longer be shopping

Also, on 6/3/09 Glenn Beck agreed with a guest who urged Bin Laden to attack U.S. with nuclear weapons, was extremely offensive.

Finally, on 7/28/09 Glenn Beck said "The President has exposed himself as a guy .. who has a deep-seated hatred for white people ... or the white culture... This man is a racist.", was the last straw.

I will no longer be shopping at Men's Warehouse until I'm notified that Men's Warehouse has removed all of your advertising on the Glenn Beck Show.

106. Ha Ha Ha! Smart Advertisers
would NOT advertise on Faux News to begin with because seriously, who watches that propaganda outlet (not news outlet) these days? All they ever bring on are the same bunch of agenda-driven rightwingers (Michelle Malkin, that Ingraham person, and of course our favorite hater, Annie Coulter!)

110. About 2 months ago on The View he was called 'a lying sack of dog mess.'
The brouhaha did not involve Elizabeth Hasselbeck, but Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg were very offended by what Whoopi termed "lies" about a Beck radio-show account of a recent Amtrak train ride he took along with the women. Whoopi called Beck "a lying sack o’ dog mess" after Beck claimed Amtrak employees pushed him aside to cater to Whoopi and Barbara.

118. Is there a way
we can send the sponsors contact numbers and addresses to African American communities and in other websites. btw I'm a huffpost guy but you guys have been on a roll with the Kenyan birth certificate ,Lou Dobbs boycott and now Beck.

Another thing, can we please put the sponsors on the home page and let it be update regularly so we know who the f-ck pays this guys to spew their bullcrap.

Somebody raise this point earlier, I know that we won't be able to take them off the TV screen but if through boycotting their sponsors,it means that they have to dig deep in their own pockets just to be able to crap, then that counts as a victory for us because even though they can still sh-t,it's gonna hurt every time they do.

Just want to warn you about another threat to American society, there's a certain Christian theocratic country in Asia whose citizens keeps migrating to our country illegally because their nation is fucked up thanks to their medieval policies. They're usually the ones answering your calls when you call customer service despite the fact that they're not even here in the States.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3LvVCZvtqE

Read the comments and they're actually blaming Spain and us ,the United States for the shit they're in thanks to their theocratic policies and politicians. However I just got piss when somebody commented on that video that despite the fact that we are rich ,we are "poor in morals" and yet they continue to migrate here in this country and point fingers at other nations who they think took advantage of them.

I wonder if we should also boycott companies that outsource to this countries. First, it means job for us here in the States, I mean we bail them out and yet they took their business elsewhere and 2nd, maybe it's about time this Republican fans (they love Bush, many jobs we're outsourced to them during Bush regime) realized that they're not some sort of god's people, that their economy depended on other countries since their population policies causes a brain drain in their nation and 3rd, how nice would it be to call customer service and talk to a CSR that actually understand your complaints and not in another location?

117. The US Postal Service had an ad on his show today.
Isn't that a government agency? Why are they advertising on Beck?
