Ford Ramps up Production as Demand Rebounds

DEARBORN, Michigan (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co said on Thursday it is increasing production over the rest of the year to meet increased demand spurred by the U.S. government's "Cash for Clunkers" sales incentive program.

Ford said it now plans to build 495,000 vehicles in the third quarter, up 10,000 from its previous forecast. That would mark an increase over year-earlier levels of 18 percent.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker also set a fourth-quarter production target of 570,000 vehicles, up 33 percent from year-earlier levels.

The output gains will translate into immediately higher revenues for Ford, the only U.S. automaker to have avoided a federally sponsored bankruptcy. Major automakers book revenue when vehicles are manufactured and shipped to dealers.

Ford had previously planned to detail its production plans in early September but said it had been forced to act earlier because sales at showrooms had remained strong through the first weeks of August.

5. well.....my daughter`s parts supplier called back 9 people

and they are working 48-56 hours a week trying to meet the demand for parts to ford,gm,and toyota.

i guess their taxes on 48-56 hours are helping to pay down that debt.

Thank you for your firsthand report/experience. Things are starting to feel a bit better here in mid-michigan.

Lots of new vehicles on the road and much more traffic, it seems, in town. Actually started to see a few help wanted ads in our local papers for production workers.

8. Any recovery based on govt largess and debt

may give the economy a sugar-high, but diabetes will eventually set in.
We have built a phoney-baloney economy on debt financing since RayGun.
Fixing the problem with more debt is not sustainable.
We are only kicking the can down the road. Is it no wonder China
is nervous about financing any more debt?

In a way, ignoring the trillions of dollars that our government has sent to Wall Street (along with foreign banks) while focusing like a laser on a $3 billion appropriation bill makes you more of a "fiscal conservative" than someone aware of the broader context of US government spending. :silly:

Bailouts? Was I supposed to qualify my remarks first? Those Bailouts royally pissed me off. Bush started them, and Obama piled on more. So much for change.

But yeah I know I know, whats a measly 3 billion? Can hardly get a cup of coffee with that. If its such a pittance, surely it will not have any stimulative effect..so whats thew point of doing it?

U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. announced Thursday that it is boosting third-quarter production in North America by another 10,000 units to meet increased demand for its vehicles.

According to Ford Americas President Mark Fields, the company's third-quarter production goal is now 495,000 units, about 18 percent higher than a year ago.

Ford also increased its production targets for the fourth quarter to 570,000 vehicles, a 33 percent increase over the same period last year.

Ford is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the federal government's "cash for clunkers" program. Its Ford Focus compact has been one of the most popular choices for customers taking advantage of the program, which provides up to 4,500 U.S. dollars to motorists trading in gas-guzzlers for new, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
