Victims' Families Press Bush to Pull 9/11 Ads (Bush refuses to pull ads)
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=584&ncid=584&e=3&u=/nm/20040305/pl_nm/campaign_bush_reaction_dc

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Families who lost relatives in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks pressed President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election campaign on Friday to stop running political ads that use images of the devastated World Trade Center to show him as a strong leader in troubled times.

"As a firefighter who spent months at Ground Zero, it's deeply offensive to see the Bush campaign use these images to capitalize on the greatest American tragedy of our time," New York firefighter Tom Ryan said at a news conference. snip

"MY SON WAS MURDERED ..."

Among those angered was Bob McIlvaine, who lost his son Bobby when hijacked planes destroyed the Twin Towers.

"My son was murdered on September 11th," he said. "To argue that using footage of the wreckage of the towers to further someone's political career is 'tasteful' really needs to be rejected outright, and I condemn it."

1. Bless them all...
I'd be screaming bloody murder if ANY politician used this tragedy to run for office, if I'd lost someone on 9/11. How incredibly tacky. And how unsurprising, coming from BushCo.

Hope these survivors are able to find some peace, some day.

17. I think you are right,Hobarticus
I find the ads very offensive but it's really the relatives and friends of the victims, along with the rescue workers, who really need to speak out. They have suffered so much.

"To argue that using footage of the wreckage of the towers to further someone's political career is 'tasteful' really needs to be rejected outright, and I condemn it."

It is also distastful that the "footage of firefighters" in some parts of the ad are played by actors.

4. If this is the New York reaction to campaign ads
....I can't wait to see the response when they try and hold the convention at Ground Zero. It will be a bigger scale backfire and closer to the election They had better tread carefully in the future cuz New Yorkers on on to this unholy bunch!

9. Can't wait to see that too...
but you know BushCo policy with protesters--they must be held at the "Free Speech Zone"--which is like 2 miles away from Bushie and Co. But New Yorkers are more aggressive so I hope they really push themselves front and center in Georgie Boy's face come Sept. and protest! BTW, Bill Moyer (Los Angeles time now on PBS) tonight has a special the secret service and protesters. Should be very interesting.

NOBODY. Silence is means that 1) they're scared or 2) in agreement
with this "war on terror". Meanwhile, young men and women are
coming home either disabled or DEAD.

Where is the outcry...?

by dissing the 9/11 families like this, they arrogance will bring them down. Every time an ad is shown, people will hear the 9/11 families echo in their minds who are angry at the Pieces of Shit who are in the Bu$h administration.

If he and his loyalists are still planning to do their convention at "ground zero", my guess is that it will turn to be a very messy decision. People have had enough of the heartless, greedy bastards.

11. Perhaps the ads will just fade away
I can't believe the Bush campaign will continue a policy of stubborn arrogance concerning these ads. I realize they don't have the guts to acknowledge the tastelessness of these ads but continued controversy is not good for the Bushies.

The ads won't be pulled, they just won't be shown any longer.

12. Still having to do all the heavy lifting
widows and families and firefighters.

The longer this ad is spotlighted, without an answering ad, the better for Bush. If the DNC and the dem candidate don't turn 911 back on bush with full force, he wins on this issue alone and I'll tell you why.

Repubs have sold the myth of being strong on nat'l security so successfully that they consistently rank 20-40% over dems in polls on the issue. (Brookings Institute forum, Oct 03)

Sept 11 is a nat'l security issue. Sept 11 is Bush's issue. That is why he invokes it every chance he gets, in every speech and in every answer to every question that confuses him. It is a political choice.

The RNC would have figured on the outrage of these good people and perhaps that of the 30% pure partisans. But the overwhelming majority gives nat'l security issues to repubs/bush.

LTTE, rallies, nothing will cut into Bush's benefit unless the DNC and Kerry lay 911 at Bush's feet. It happened on his watch. Say so.
-With the biggest nat'l megaphone available.

15. 'Dubya is trampling graves of 9/11 victims' - IOL
New York - Pressure intensified on Friday on George Bush over his re-election campaign's use of September 11 images, with victims' families urging the American president to stop treading "on the bodies of our dead."

Some family members told a press conference in New York that they were "outraged" by election television advertisements that showed the devastation at the World Trade Centre site, and the body of a firefighter being carried from the rubble.

"Ground Zero is a sacred site," said Rita Lasar, a steering committee member of the group, September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows.

Lasar, whose brother was killed when the trade centre's twin towers collapsed, urged the Republican president to "find some other way to run a campaign without stepping on the bodies of our dead."

19. Question
(My first post at DU! Woo-hoo!)

I have a * apologist on another site saying how Clinton visited the Oklahoma bombing site during his election campaign in '96 and no-one raised this kind of ruckus.

Now, I have been trying to find info on this (Clinton at Oklahoma in 1996) but can't find anything so far. I am assuming that this was a regular stop on the campaign trail and for him to not visit the site would have seemed like he was indifferent to the event. Do I assume right? I also assume that Clinton didn't base his campaign around the bombing and make ads featuring it! (I am not from the US). If anyone here has anything else to back me up as I slap this neo-con supporting poster down, let me know!

it's using it for RETCHED AND OBVIOUS SELF PROMOTION GAG FEST ADVERTISEMENTS that is the thing.

Clinton walked through south central here in L.A. right after the riots, well, during them really, and I remember thinking...hey! That's really something, because Poppy Bush wouldn't go anywhere near there till it was secure there.

Oklahoma bombing memorial dedicated; Clinton calls it 'sacred ground'

April 19, 2000
Web posted at: 11:05 p.m. EDT (0305 GMT)

From staff and wire reports

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Speaking five years to the day since the blast, U.S. President Bill Clinton led dedication ceremonies Wednesday for the Oklahoma City National Memorial to the 149 adults and 19 children who lost their lives in the 1995 bombing.

"America will never forget," Clinton said. "There are places in our national landscape so scarred by freedom's sacrifice that they shape forever the soul of America -- Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Selma. This place is such sacred ground."

Clinton called the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building an "attack at the core of our nation's being, at the heartland of America, an attack on all of America and every American."

A crowd of 5,000 was present to hear Clinton say, "You've given too much, yet you have so much more to give." A larger group watched on TV screens set up in an adjacent parking lot.

Here is another....

Clinton honors Oklahoma bombing victims
Visits city as tragedy's anniversary nears
April 5, 1996
Web posted at: 6:45 a.m. EST

From Correspondent Tony Clark

OKLAHOMA CITY (CNN) -- President and Mrs. Clinton went to Oklahoma City Friday to meet with the victim's families and survivors of last year's bombing. On this visit, some of the victim's families and survivors have something to discuss with the president: They want their voices heard in the form of strong anti-terrorism legislation.

The bomb-shattered federal building is gone, but the pain lingers in the city. President and Mrs. Clinton will honor the victims of the bombing that killed 168 men, women and children as they did a year ago when they led the nation in mourning.

The massive bomb in a moving van parked in front of the building ripped away nine floors, including a day care center where many children had just been dropped off that morning.

The attack is still fresh for the victims' families, and they are grateful their country hasn't forgotten them.

Guess I should have been a bit more thorough in my Googling! I am also assuming that Clinton did not use the images of the aftermath of that incident to further his cause in the '96 race, otherwise we surely would have heard about it by now!

31. Clinton did not use
the Murrah Building Bombing in his campaign ads. Yes, he did make stops in OK, including one in Tulsa that my journalism students covered for our high school newspaper. Clinton did not use the OKC bombing site for campaign fodder or brag about catching McVeigh within 3 days. While on the stump in 1996 Clinton spent a lot of time talking about the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Bill, not McVeigh/Nichols and co.

28. The thing I don't understand...
Why would Bush want to brag about 9/11? It is the most grievous national security fialure in our countrys history!

It is ackin to a firechief showing up 2 hours after you have called the fire department, an hour after your home has burned to the ground, strolling through the rubble over the charred bodies of your family and taking a bow.

I don't get it.

30. Two reasons why * is ignoring those who are offended
Edited on Mon Mar-08-04 02:00 AM by Angel_O_Peace
1) The number of people who were directly affected by 9/11 (WTC, Pentagon and Flight 93), are a small number of people in the scheme of voting numbers. As * has shown all along, these people don't really matter, meaning he stayed for the photo-op at Booker ES instead of taking action, didn't want an investigation into the events that led up to that tragedy, and has been stonewalling on cooperating with any investigation.

2) The other people it mostly offends are the American citizen voting Dems, the "lib-bruhls", and to *, their opinions don't count anyway.

In a nutshell, * could give a flying F***.

I wrote to George Soros on behalf of the victims' families asking if he would, at the least, speak out about exploiting the horror of 9/11, and possibly at the most, somehow file a suit on behalf of those people to have * not use those ads.

Bush Has Got To Go!
