Ashcroft Hospitalized With Pancreatitis (might die)

Attorney General John Ashcroft was in a hospital intensive care unit Friday after suffering a severe case of gallstone pancreatitis, a serious and painful abdominal illness.

Ashcroft, a 61-year-old former Missouri senator and governor, was being treated with antibiotics. The ailment often clears up after a week or so of treatment but sometimes requires surgery. In extreme cases, it can cause death.

Doctors at George Washington University Hospital said they needed more time to evaluate Ashcroft and make a prognosis. It's possible Ashcroft could remain hospitalized for a month or more, medical experts said.

Pentecostal church. I don't think they oppose any type of medical care.

Jehovah's Witnesses are completely different from Assembly of God and the only medical care they oppose is blood transfusions. There is a verse in the Bible which says not to eat blood and they reason that it you can be "fed" through an IV that you shouldn't have IV transfusions of blood because that woiuld be eating blood. I think the verse means don't eat blood pudding or make soup with blood, or blood sausage, and was probably a good idea at one time. But Jesus said the old dietary laws didn't apply to his followers, anyway.

Complicated article - I had to read it a few times - basically said the guy slipped his wife some tasteless, odorless arsenic and she developed acute pancreatitis and died. She couldn't believe at first that her projectile vomiting had been caused by her husband poisoning her.

It's interesting to see Ashcroft suffering through what must be severe pain. He's fought to yank the licenses of doctors who treat patients with severe pain, and in some cases, thrown them in jail for their medical practices (for one example, look http://maillist.linuxmednews.org/pipermail/mednews/2003-December/000446.html">here). I'm sure he'd probably benefit from large doses of painkillers right now. I wonder if his attending doctors will attend to his explicit wishes and legal advice and give him minimal pain medication.
