Gov. Strickland halts executions until at least December
Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Ted Strickland on Monday halted executions in Ohio until at least December to give the state more time to review its system of lethal injection.

Since the failed execution of Romell Broom on Sept. 15, the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has been developing a contingency plan should similar problems that arise in the future.

In Broom's case, his executioners could not find suitable veins to administer a lethal cocktail of three drugs. Back-up options now under consideration include injecting into muscle or bone and using a single drug or different concoction of drugs, DRC spokeswoman Julie Walburn said.

Strickland's decision postponed the executions of Lawrence Reynolds and Darryl Durr. It followed a Monday morning decision by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to stay Reynolds' execution in light of the botched Broom execution and two previous executions by lethal injection that encountered problems before succeeding.

1. Good for him...
It's a small step towards eliminating the death penalty completely.

2. I'm afraid it is going to take things like failed executions and
proof of executing an innocent man such as Cameron Todd Willingham to finally end the death penalty in this county. That's a hell of an individual price to pay, but I think that's what it is going to take.

3. what about
What about the "individual" price his victim(s) paid? What about their pain?

4. And that would achieve . . . what, exactly?
Will his victims come back? Will their families feel better? Or will we just have one more death, this time with the homicide credited to the people of the State of Ohio? That's a lot of hands to share the blood, so it won't make them look too red, I suppose.

Just answer the question, SWr. Unless, of course, you can't.

Im sure it will to some although they may not admit it openly.

If it were my family member or my wife ... Id like to watch him fry in the chair.

And yes ... it would bring me satisfaction.

In your book that prob. makes me a psycho .. Oh well.

8. I've known survivors
So I'm not really interested in hypotheticals. Both Suzanne B. and Shawn K. had close family members murdered (father for the former, mother for the latter). Suzanne was also injured in the attack that killed her father. Both persons worked to make sure that the assailant received justice and was locked up. Neither one of them would have felt any better, achieved any measure of peace, or thought anything had been accomplished had the killers been executed. They are also Christians in supportive congregations who take what the Bible says pretty seriously.

It's not surprising that there are so many people in our country infected with blood lust and who buy into the myth of redemptive violence. It's what drives the original crimes, the idea that violence will solve a problem. More violence doesn't deter anyone else. It doesn't bring down the crime rate. It doesn't make someone else stop and think about what they're doing before they do it. It just creates more violence, and reassures some of the more feeble-minded in their irrational belief.

9. wow
Wow very nice. How do you know that Im speaking from a hypothetical? You dont know me at all.

I guess your only recourse when someone doesnt agree with YOUR OPINION (and thats all it is is your opinion) is to
resort to personal attacks.

Im not feeble minded / or irrational at all ... I dont happen to believe that he has the RIGHT to breath the same air I do anymore.

He lost that right during the violent act he committed.

10. Go back and read your own post
"If it were my family member or my wife . . ." See, that first little word? "If"? That makes your statement a hypothetical and a conjecture. And I didn't attack you personally at all, if you are not, as you say, feeble-minded or irrational; but I couldn't say that for sure -- after all, I don't know you at all, according to you.

Except I think I do.

12. Sorry to introduce you to you own words
That must have been painful. Maybe you should execute me? Then you'd feel better, I'm sure!

13. If one innocent person is put to death...
it's not worth it. And you know that has happened many times with our fucked up justice system. The state should not have power of life and death period.
