Kerry would win US presidency if election held now: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) would beat President George W. Bush (news - web sites) by a significant margin if a presidential election was held now, according to an opinion poll.

The CNN/USA Today/Gallup survey indicated the Massachusetts senator would win 52 percent of the vote compared to Bush's 44 percent.

HOLLYWOOD -- The 2000 recount may be history for some voters, but for Nancy Geneivive the 36-day struggle still brings to mind two words: stolen election.

So when the Coral Springs artist tossed presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry a question Monday about his plans to challenge President Bush, she summed it up this way, ``What can we do to prevent him from stealing the election again?''

Kerry encountered Floridians still sore about the disputed election at a town hall meeting with about 500 supporters in Broward County, a Democratic bastion with serious voting irregularities in 2000. Bush defeated Democrat Al Gore by 537 votes in Florida after the U.S. Supreme Court stopped a state recount.

Kerry said he would assemble a legal team to guard against any irregularities in Florida this fall, focusing on problematic precincts and seeking injunctions where necessary to guarantee voting rights.

In a must-read article, Howard Gold of Barrons asked pollster John Zogby to "lay out the electoral map as he sees it, based on various polls conducted throughout the country." The resulting table is very good news for Democrats:

1. John Kerry "is ahead in 17 of the so-called Blue states (including the District of Columbia), and in New Hampshire which Bush won in 2000, representing some 226 electoral votes."
2. President Bush "leads in 21 of the Red states, with 176 electoral votes." He does not lead in any of the states Gore won in 2000.
3. "A dozen more states, with 136 electoral votes, are considered in play." They are Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

If Zogby's current estimate holds, all Kerry "will need to do is take Ohio and Florida to pass the 270-vote threshold and win the presidency." And Bush "would seem to have an uphill battle here, if things continue as they are now."

It's simply not close enough to mean the electoral college will matter. I know it's mathematically possible but it is simply not likely.

The touch screen machines are in place and there is no recount possible with these machines.

I don't care what the polls say. The GOP has control over the machines and the will exercise that conbtrol and steal this election plain and simple. Imagine you're the GOP power infrastructure: if you had the leverage over the GOP dominated companies that built these machines, and as such you had the ability to fix the outcome of the election in your favor, why wouldn't you??

The worst part of it is that we had a chance to fix this and we blew it.

This is terrific news and stop being so negative! Rate the story a 5 on yahoo. The more we get headlines like this the more "undecideds" will vote for Kerry. You have to keep up the mantra that Kerry is ahead and everytime you do, the margin will widen. And * won't be able to steal the election when the margin is wide. Let's keep repeating the mantra of "landslide".
