Prime Minister Paul Martin has ruled out a May election and is now expected to wait until at least June to head to the polls in hopes the Liberals will have recovered the public's confidence in the aftermath of the $100-million sponsorship corruption scandal.

Senior Liberal insiders told CanWest News Service the Martin-led government needs more time for hearings into the sponsorship scandal to demonstrate to Canadians the former finance minister did not know about the wrongdoing.

Martin also wants to show he is doing everything possible to get to the bottom of the problem and will punish those who abused taxpayers' money
