Bomb kills four US troops in Afghanistan: NATO

(AFP) – 2 hours ago

KABUL — A roadside bomb attack killed four US soldiers in Afghanistan as pressure mounted Friday for President Barack Obama to order thousands more soldiers into an escalating eight-year war.

"Two US service members were killed and two died of wounds sustained in a single improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan October 15," the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

No further details were immediately available but thousands of US troops are fighting in southern Afghanistan as part of a push to quell a resurgent Taliban in what is their spiritual heartland.

The latest military deaths come as Obama debates whether to send thousands of additional troops to the impoverished country on top of 21,000 extra forces he committed after taking office this year.

2. Afghan woman, child killed in NATO-led operation
GHAZNI, Afghanistan (Reuters) - An Afghan woman and a child were killed in a joint NATO-Afghan operation against insurgents in Afghanistan on Friday, sparking a protest by a group of angry villagers.

Civilian deaths, especially during operations by foreign forces, have infuriated Afghans and increased hostility towards the presence of international troops nearly eight years after the Taliban's fall in Afghanistan.

The NATO-led force said the woman and a school-aged girl died during an operation by foreign and Afghan forces against suspected militants in the southeastern Ghazni province.

Reuters television images from the scene showed two bodies including that of a child lying on the floor of a house as a group of Afghans huddled together and cried over the bodies.
