DC Council Votes 11-2 in Favor of Same-Sex Marriage

The D.C. City Council voted 11-2 in favor of same-sex marriage Tuesday morning.

It was the first of two votes on the issue allowing same-sex marriage in the nation's capital.

The bill sponsored by openly gay Councilman David Catania has been expected to pass for some time, as 10 of the 13 council members supported its introduction.

The final vote is expected later this month, and Mayor Adrian Fenty has said he will sign the bill.

10. I sent a note this morning to the DC Diocese

I heard today on the news that the Diocese has decided to stop giving aid to the poor, the hungry, the sick, and the unsheltered -if- the politicians/voters pass Gay Marriage legislation.

It got me thinking about what would offend Jesus in this matter.

Would Jesus be offended by Love or would Jesus be offended by letting the poor, the hungry, the sick, and the unsheltered go without.

I recall Jesus saying whatsoever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me.

There is food for thought.

I wish I could stay all day, but my husband and I have an adoption seminar in Vermont Thursday night through Saturday with an agency we've by trying for years to get an interview with (but more on that some other time...)

I recognized your screen name and figured that was you posting over there :)

And please post all the info anywhere you think would generate some excitement and more bodies! Chances are the opposition will be busing in agitators from anti-gay churches from around NJ, since we totally annihilated them last Monday, so the more supporters the better. I hope we get to meet at some point! But if we don't this time, there will be plenty more opportunities over the next few weeks. We've got lots of amazing things planned!

I've become rather outspoken on the subject of marriage equality-- my blog post about the subject was quoted in the Star Ledger (of course they did not tell me, someone tweeted the link) about why a straight girl like me should care about marriage equality in the first place (I actually have to write a paper on marriage equality due next week-- should be easy considering I'm an intern for Garden State Equality)

Unfortunately I can only go to the Thursday rallies as I have classes on Mondays and can't miss at this point in the semester.

I posted the info on the NJ forum here-- feel free to cross post it. I'll also tweet it and put it in my blog. I'd love to on my FB but I've sworn off politics on facebook.

Same-sex marriages would begin in the city as soon as the bill passes a period of Congressional review. Congress is not expected to alter the law.

Can someone explain how this works?
