The Senate Judiciary Committee voted overwhelmingly Thursday in favor of approving the nomination of U.S. District Judge Thomas I. Vanaskie to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The vote was 16-3 with Sen. Arlen Specter among the yes votes. Republican Sens. Charles Grassley of Iowa, John Cornyn of Texas and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma voted no.

The nomination moves to the full Senate, which is expected to easily confirm the nomination. No date for a vote is scheduled.

"I'm very happy," said Judge Vanaskie, who was in his Scranton office during the vote. "I'm glad to get that step behind us."

He expects to be confirmed, he said. The Senate almost never votes down nominations approved by such large margins in committee. The panel deliberated less than 10 minutes before voting.
