Factory Orders in U.S. Climb for Sixth Time in Seven Months Amid Recovery

Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Orders placed with U.S. factories rose in October for the sixth time in the past seven months, propelled by gains in non-durable goods that overshadowed declines in spending on new equipment.

The 0.6 percent increase in bookings compared with a revised 1.6 percent gain for September that was larger than previously estimated, data from the Commerce Department showed today in Washington. Demand for non-durables such as petroleum and food, which often reflects changes in prices, rose 1.6 percent, while bookings for durable goods fell 0.6 percent.

Businesses are reluctant to boost investment and production on equipment such as computers and machinery on concern that consumer spending will be slow to recover. Another report today showing the economy last month lost the fewest jobs since the recession began and unemployment unexpectedly dropped, signal that companies may be starting to gain confidence.

“The demand for manufactured goods has stabilized and even begun a slow recovery but remains at a low level,” said Steven Wood, president of Insight Economics LLC in Danville, California.

7. The inflation in my area all happeed under Bush, and it began in earnest when

gas hit $4 a gallon. Prices at the grocery store have come down considerably this year. I can't afford to buy anything else, so I dont know about other consumables and durable goods.......but friends tell me sales abound.

8. All these numbers have been fudged for years. Hardly started under

Obama. Why do you think the average worker has lost 30% of their PURCHASING power since 1978?

Transfer of income to the top 2% and to large business as well.

Bernanke and other Bush hangers-on are not likely to stop it, either.

In the 70s, this town had a 3% unemployment rate; average income was in the top 30% of the country. Now, there are two shopping centers completely empty of tenants within two blocks of my house, unemployment is 10%, and last year, income was in the bottom 25% of the country.

Please find me the brighter lining in that....
