Los Angeles Episcopalians elect lesbian bishop
Source: CNN

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Los Angeles Episcopalians elected an openly lesbian bishop late Saturday, the denomination's news service reported.

The Rev. Mary Douglas Glasspool, 55, will become the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church since Gene Robinson took office in New Hampshire in 2004, if she is formally approved.

Conservative factions in the Anglican Communion -- a 77-million member denomination worldwide, with the Episcopal Church as its U.S. branch -- have opposed the ordination of gay bishops.

The archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Anglican Communion, issued a statement Saturday saying that Glasspool's election "raises very serious questions not just for the Episcopal Church and its place in the Anglican Communion, but for the Communion as a whole," according to the Episcopal Church's Web site.

9. Clergy too
There is an new subset of rules for clergy and parishioners who "cross the Tiber". RCC priests cannot marry, but if you were Episcopal and convert, you can keep your wife, kids, etc...

14. But you can't convert to the Episopal Church, get married, then come back.
Here's what I want to know: what are they going to do with Archbishop John Hepworth of Australia is primate of the Traditional Anglican Communion, who was a major player in this entire operation? He just happens to have been a cradle Catholic who became a Benedictine, converted to the Anglican Church and then was married, twice. I think that's married twice as in married, divorced and remarried. The deal is the married priests can come in , but no married bishops.

8. Those 'offended' episcopals should join up with all those..
offended LUtherans who marched out the ELCA for
welcoming openly gay pastors.

Then maybe they can claim some identity:
the church of the pissed-off homophobes....

but that's all they got: their homophobia.

Sheesh...

but I think the church is finally showing some
spine...

More like it's just as divisive and foolish as it ever was.

13. Congrats to the new bishop-to-be. Another liberal wing of a liberal denomination speaks up...
As a Unitarian myself, I'm always pleased to note other compassionate religious social liberals at work in the world.
