After Iran Warning Obama Sends to Brazil His Number One Man for LatAm
Written by Newsroom
Monday, 14 December 2009

The governments of Brazil and Bolivia reacted strongly to the US message to Latin America about "flirting" with the Iran regime. Brazil is "minimizing" the Monday visit of a top US Department official and Bolivia said that it is sovereign and practices a "dialogue culture" with all countries.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week warned Latin American countries "to think twice" about strategic alliances with Iran, which she described as the "world's leading promoter and exporter of terrorism."

Last month Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was on an official tour of Brazil, Bolivia and Venezuela. The US and Israel are fearful of the Teheran regime's growing "infiltration" and "penetration" of Latin America.

~snip~
"It wasn't a message for Brazil. And if it was, it was the wrong message", said Garcia quoted by O Estado de S. Paulo, which was his only official statement on the coming visit.

From Washington Valenzuela denied any misunderstandings with Brazil because of recent public differences between presidents Obama and Lula on the Honduras elections, Iran and the climate change summit in Copenhagen. "We just have a few diverging views in some issues", Valenzuela was quoted by Folha, which anticipates that Honduras and Iran are precisely the issues to be addressed when the US envoy arrives Monday.

2. "LatAm?" Looks wierd, for sure, but some people use that abbreviation for Latin America.
It also could be clumsy because it's a translation from the original Portuquese.

6. Well, convoluted anyway.

Far from transparent in meaning. If they really wanted to be subtle they would avoid the notion that the US/Obama had the chutzpah to warn Brazil about much of anything, but subtle is apparently still not what we know how to do.

3. I'm enjoying this...
Latin America working to shake off its chains and telling an imperialist nation to mind our own business.

And I like Hugo Chavez, too. Yes, he's a little goofy, but he annoys our ruling class.

I still laugh every time I light a candle and smell sulfur.

14. Welcome to DU, Goldstein1984 (if you haven't been welcomed before)!!!
I'm still working on my PM to you on the other matter.

------------------

I'm not exactly laughing at Hugo Chavez's latest famous remark ("Obama is the prisoner of the Pentagon") but it does continue to resonate in my mind. What I fear is that Chavez was being charitable.

12. To qualify for the highest honors from the U.S., a Latin American country has to...
--kill thousands of union leaders and not prosecute the military/paramilitary murderers
--kill thousands of others (teachers, human rights workers, political leftists, peasant farmers, journalists) and not prosecute the military/paramilitary murderers
--accept $6 BILLION in U.S. military aid through the fingers of US war profiteers with no impact on the flow of cocaine to the U.S.
--displace 2 million peasant farmers from areas where Monsanto, Chiquita, Occidental Petroleum, Exxon Mobil, big drug lords and the Pentagon want to operate
--maintain a filthy political culture based on drug money, death squads, bribery, threats and intimidation
--sign the country's sovereignty over to the Pentagon for a huge and unlimited U.S. military buildup
--connive with the U.S. against neighboring democratic countries that don't do any of the above
--extra credit: fraudulent elections, privatization of resources and public services, "free trade for the rich," accepts usurious World Bank/IMF loans, hates Cuba
--special circumstances: has diplomatic relations with Iran while being a rightwing government.

U.S. State Department "report card", in order of compliance with the above requirements...

Colombia: A++ cum laude
Honduras: B (improving)
Peru: C (passing grade, needs improvement)
Haiti: C (passing grade, needs improvement)
Panama: C (passing grade, needs improvement)
Mexico: C- (needs to stop talking about legalizing marijuana)
Costa Rica: D ("free trade for the rich," A; conniving, C; militarization, F)
Chile: F+ (needs to repeat grades 1 thru 12, military dictatorship)
Guatemala: F+ (fragile leftist government, fascists still around, could take over)
El Salvador: F+ (ditto)
Nicaragua: F+ (may lose the plus soon)
Brazil: F
Argentina: F
Uruguay: F
Paraguay: F
Ecuador: F
Bolivia: F-
Venezuela: Dropped out of school.

15. I forgot Cuba. I guess it would be: Dropped out of school, went to prison...
...on multiple offenses, including giving doctors free medical educations, exporting free universal health care and topnotch literacy programs to other countries, and being friends with Hugo Chavez.
