WASHINGTON - Taking an important step on the thorny path to closing the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the White House plans to announce Tuesday that the government will acquire an underutilized state prison in rural Illinois to be the new home for a limited number of terrorist suspects held at Guantanamo.

Administration officials as well as Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn will make an official announcement at the White House.

Officials from both the White House and Durbin's office confirmed that President Barack Obama had directed the government to acquire Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Ill., a sleepy town near the Mississippi River about 150 miles from Chicago. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting Tuesday's announcement.

A Durbin aide said the facility would house federal inmates and no more than 100 detainees from Guantanamo Bay.

I really think they are just a bunch of racist white angry folks, most of them poor, most pay no or little if any tax, some of them on government provided Medicare, some on food stamps, some living in rent subsidized apartments. 4. Guantanamo inmates to be sent to Illinois prison

US President Barack Obama has ordered the federal government to buy a prison in Illinois to take a number of inmates from Guantanamo Bay.

The move is a key part of Mr Obama's plan to close the Cuba-based jail.

The number of inmates for transfer to the Thomson Correctional Center has not officially been given, but US media report it could be between 35 and 90.

Senior officials said security would be upgraded, making Thomson the most secure jail in the country.

9. Practical question: how is indefinite detention in Il. more palitable than the same in Cuba?

It'll get Congress off of their collective asses and adress the detainees situation. New legislation has to be written, laws that are both Constitutional, and address why the detainees can't currently be tried (tainted evidence). If the detainees are hidden away at Gitmo Bay, they'll be ignored, as no one will jeopardize a re-election campaign even bothering to mention them. Bringing them to Illinois will FORCE Congress to do SOMETHING.
