Lieberman won't rule out run as Republican in 2012

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman, a former Democrat who sits with Democratic caucus, said Tuesday that he would not rule out running for re-election in 2012 as a Republican.

Lieberman angered his colleagues in the Democratic caucus this week by threatening to torpedo health care legislation if it contains a government-run public health insurance or an expansion of Medicare.

Lieberman said he wasn't sure which party, if any, he would represent in his next election.

"I like being an independent, so that's definitely a possibility," the Connecticut senator said. "But I'd say all options are open."

Damn, I had high hopes for Obama, but now believe he is toast. If the democrats can't even stand up to the republicans on their most important domestic issues, how can the American people expect the democrats to protect them from foreign threats. The democrats had their chance, and once again they failed to measure up to the task because they felt compromise was more important than results. Once again the democrats were all talk and no action, they capitulated, threw up the white flag and surrendered before the first political shot was fired, and then they will wonder why the American people do not trust them for protection from foreign enemies..

At this point it would take something really extraordinary, such as forcing the republicans to filibuster, let the American people decide if they want
true health car reform, or do they want to support the republicans shutting down the government, much like like the time they did with Clinton.
Obama still has the bully pulpit advantage to make it work, he just needs to stand up for America and let the people know what is going on,
rather than trying to compromise behind closed doors until there is nothing left. However, I fear something extraordinary will never happen
as once again the democrats will compromise everything away rather than stand up and fight. The right wing is the school yard bully and the lefties
need only stand up one time to make them stop - if not now, if not for the millions of Americans that are havign their lives destroyed, then
when will they stand up? I fear never,...

The public hears that Democrats control the WH, the House of Reps and the Senate and most of the public takes that at face value bc most of the public does not keep up with politics. So then, most of the public thinks to itself that, even with control of everything, Democrats cannot manage to get anything done. So, it sees Democrats as ineffectual bunglers. And, if a bad bill passes, they blame the Democrats for it, not a coalition of Republicans and Purple Snakes.

He only won his seat because Karl Rove cut off all funds to the Republican candidate, and had the Connecticut Republicans
vote for Lieberman, who even then only won with 52% of the vote. Lieberman supported McCain in the 2008. If he's done anything
that significantly was in opposition to major Republican initiatives in recent times, he certainly hasn't made a lot of noise
about it. On the other hand, stuff he has done to oppose Democrats is in the headlines every week.

Joe Lieberman running as a Republican would only change in that he would now be conforming to existing Truth in Advertising laws.

President Obama writes a new health reform prescription

On the campaign trail, Barack Obama vowed to take on the drug industry by allowing Americans to import cheaper prescription medicine. "We'll tell the pharmaceutical companies 'thanks, but no, thanks' for the overpriced drugs -- drugs that cost twice as much here as they do in Europe and Canada," he said back then.

On Tuesday, the matter came to the Senate floor -- and President Obama forgot the "no, thanks" part. Siding with the pharmaceutical lobby, the administration successfully fought against the very idea Obama had championed.

"It's got to be a little awkward," said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.).

It's even more awkward for millions of Americans who are forced to pay up to 10 times the prices Canadians and Europeans pay for identical medication, often produced in the same facilities by the same manufacturers, simply because the U.S. government refuses to rein in drug prices. snip

One after the other, the drug industry's friends from pharmaceutical-manufacturing states New Jersey, Delaware and North Carolina went to the floor Tuesday to cite the FDA letter.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-Bristol-Myers Squibb) warned that "you may have a heart attack" because of counterfeit medicine from abroad.

"This is a matter of life or death," agreed Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-Merck).

Carper (D-AstraZeneca) cited "remaining safety and soundness and health concerns," while Sen. Kay Hagan (D-GlaxoSmithKline) voiced "serious doubts that we can adequately ensure the safety of the drug supply."

These arguments don't hold up well, considering that 40 percent of the active ingredients in American prescription drugs come from India and China, and that the latter slipped tainted heparin past the FDA. But fright was about the best argument opponents could use to defeat a popular proposal that would save the federal government $19 billion over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Consumers would save many times that. snip
