Bengals' Henry dies at 26

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry died Thursday, one day after suffering injures in a fall from the back of a pickup truck, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said. He was 26.

Police on Wednesday described the incident as a domestic dispute with his fiancée. Henry was found in the road about eight miles north of downtown Charlotte.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

6. A fall out of the Pickup truck bed on to his head could easily be fatal

7. Oh no doubt, especially if the vehicle was moving
But if she was swerving, throwing him around, then this is no accident.

8. Yes, What is curious is that he was "found" on the road.
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 10:20 AM by avaistheone1
His fiance somehow didn't know he was no longer in the truck bed, and lying in the road. Hard to believe, but I admit it's possible.

It all depends on what sort of domestic dispute you were dealing with
fired up emotions can lead to many terrible mistakes. I once had to respond to a call where a young man ran over his grandfather twice with a van. He was arguing with his father and backed down the driveway and didn't see his grandfather. Then he panicked and pulled froward. Terrible story but it illustrates what a family dispute can do to one's judgment.

18. Horrible. How damn tragic for everyone. That's a life-changer and not for the better..
We seem to be a culture where people think it is acceptable to get so wound up emotionally that their operating in stupid mode in a matter of seconds.

31. True, it's funny there is a young man on my crew that looks to me as a father figure
he is a bit of a hot head and someone had him seeing red by flirting with his girlfriend. He wanted to beat on the guy. I was trying to explain to him the value of self restraint and self control. To reinforce this idea I tried to think of a good current character, icon or celebrity to use as a good example of self control and I found I couldn't think of any from this era.

13. She has been very cooperative with law enforcement
and was by Chris Henry's side the entire time he was on life support. Though details are very minimal and I would plead let's wait for all the information before jumping to conclusions.

17. Good for her.
Then the posted clip is misleading. It makes sounds like Henry was found on the road abandoned.

20. From info available
it really isn't clear other then the fact he fell out of the pickup.

I know they have 3 kids so I'm hoping this is a purely an accident so they have mother for them. It would be much more traumatic for them to have her go away for a period of time.

RIP Slim and crosses fingers this was a very bad accident.

27. It is safe to say as far as she drove with him in the pickup truck, that she would have known he was
in the bed of the truck.

28. that's all that's been said so far
if it is true that she stopped the truck and stayed with him till police got there, then yes, the news has been misleading and I would hope that they clear it up.

29. I didn't say that
I said she was very cooperative according to the police and that she was with him the whole time while he was on life support til he died. That part was reported. Stopping immediately I don't know.

As far as the incident itself I have no idea and it's still under investigation. Anyways I'm sure she feels terrible whether she is at fault or not and there is now 3 kids without a father.

30. Or maybe she did know
and didn't mind--that is, she thought he wasn't seriously injured. After all, presumably, she WAS trying to get away from him. Well, she succeeded.

11. That's the reported assumption at this point.
I'm sure we'll hear a lot more as the details become public.

Still, this Mountaineer mourns one of her favorite receivers from a few seasons back.

Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 10:36 AM by rocktivity
Let's see--they fight, she jumps in the truck and pulls out, he jumps on the back of the truck to stop her, he falls off.

Even I have stopped and thought about how easily Tiger Woods could have died.

The worst part about this is the part his fiance` played in it.. Regardless of what happened she must feel terrible... I can't imagine the grief of knowing you played a part in the death of a loved one.

36. Sounds more like a suicide
Edited on Mon Dec-21-09 02:18 AM by rocktivity
Neighbor Lee Hardy told WLWT-TV and The Cincinnati Enquirer that he was working in his yard when the truck left the driveway. Hardy said Henry was yelling that he needed to talk to the woman behind the wheel.

"He said, 'If you take off, I'm going to jump off the truck and kill myself,'" Hardy told the newspaper.

The first 911 tape was from an unidentified woman who said she was following a yellow pickup truck.

"It's got a black man on it with no shirt on, and he's got his arm in a cast and black pants on," she told a dispatcher. "He's beating on the back of this truck window. ... I don't know if he's trying to break in or something. It just looks crazy. It's a girl driving it."

Just over a minute later, an unidentified man called 911 and said he saw a man "laying in the road" and "definitely unconscious."
