Biden unveils federal broadband stimulus projects

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Vice President Joe Biden is announcing the first $182 million in federal stimulus money for 18 projects to expand high-speed Internet networks in rural areas and other underserved communities.

Biden spoke Thursday at a technologically-advanced manufacturing plant in north Georgia whose business has been held back by the lack of a broadband network in its part of the state.

The projects are the first part of a $7.2 billion plan to bring high-speed Internet connections to rural areas, poor neighborhoods and Native American communities.

Besides Georgia, other projects in the first set will be in Maine, New Hampshire, Ohio, Arizona and Alaska.

woohoo ! we get to pay to build these networks and then get charged by companies to use it.

it's alot cheaper than it would be otherwise giving more people access. Given your stance that the government should not invest in infrastructure if private industry benefits in any way means no roads, railroad, upgrades to electrical grid, etc.

11. Summer 2009 internet cables were buried on Salmon River

Highway in eastern Siskiyou county (far north California in an area with a large % Indian population -- low population in general --, mostly Karuk Tribe). Ironic as there are no phone there -- cell nor landlines -- and no electricity (off the grid) except for self-generation by generator.

On the adjacent Yurok and Hupa Reservations there is internet cable built by grant in 2003 that to the best of my knowledge is still not connected to the internet (and useless).
