SAN FRANCISCO - The California Supreme Court's decision Thursday to block gay marriages, while an immediate blow to gay and lesbians wanting to wed, had nothing to do with the legality of same-sex nuptials

In Thursday's order, the justices directed city officials to follow the state marriage law, "without regard to (their) personal view of the constitutionality of such provisions,'' while the case is pending. The court put the case on a fast track, with written arguments to be completed by March 29 and a hearing in late May or early June. A ruling is due within 90 days of the hearing.
