Photographs unearthed of first Ellis Island immigrant: report
Source: AFP

Photographs of the first immigrant to land at New York's famed Ellis Island have been unearthed almost 120 years after she arrived in the United States as a girl from Ireland, US media said.

Annie Moore disembarked at the tiny island in New York harbor on January 1, 1892, her 15th birthday.

But only now have relatives managed to track down pictures, the New York Times reported.

The pictures show a matronly figure in heavy, plain clothes typical of the period.

5. Well yeah, I saw that one, but its not the picture referenced in the story.
How can someone write a story about a photograph and not include the photo?

24. Wow
I went out to Ellis Island with my mom this summer and we got a pic of her 'statue'. The statue really looks like a 'little' girl. She was a grown woman for sure!

7. I don't think that's the photo that they're talking about...
although why in the world anyone would write an article about a particular photo and then not show it is beyond me?????

8. Life was not easy in those days for women in Ireland...
in those days, they aged rapidly. Not of course, any better for them in the black holes that were the slums of NYC(Four Corners).

Many women of that period were somewhat massive in appearance(fashion and style).

10. Probably she wasn't the typical barbie of a magazine's front page
that make her more human in nature.

11. Read The Article...
No where does the NY Times article state that the pictures unearthed of Annie Moore are from the DAY she arrived at Ellis Island. It says the family discovered photos of Annie, the first immigrant to arrive there, but it does not say the photos are of her arrival. Obviously, they were taken many years later.

The long unseen pictures, one of which was published Tuesday in the New York Times, show an older Moore, by then a matronly figure in heavy, plain clothes typical of the period....

21. No photos of my ancestors coming from Ireland....
they snuck in from Canada. All of them. There is a strong family tradition of not burdening the authorities with too much of our personal information.

to do a geneology search, my father told her it would cost a fortune to keep it all quiet. I relate to what you're saying....
