Pennsylvania Supremes Hand Workers A Win

The Supreme Court in Pennsylvania has ruled in favor of workers. Jesse Russell reports:

Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court has handed down a ruling that even when lawmakers are unable to push through a budget paychecks should not stop flowing to state workers. In a 30-page decision the court said the federal Fair Labor Standards Act takes precedent over a state constitution that limits funds from being used when no budget has been passed. Pennsylvania’s Governor Ed Rendell “payless paydays” during the budget impasse earlier this year citing the state constitution as giving him the authority to do so. Several labor unions representing the workers filed the lawsuit. The court said in its decision that the law requires the state to make “timely payment of wages.”

I have family in KY near Dales Hollow in TN.

I can't wait for it to get to Ohio, it will be closer to home.

2. This is a great piece of news.

California is notorious for its decrees that the In Home Support workers must not be paid. Their paychecks are always the very first to go.

This is quite a travesty as this group of people works for far less than any nursing agency would pay them. But then for the sequential Governors to continually use them as the people on whom to forestall deficit problems - that is criminal.

5. Thank Dawg, it was a Democratic Governor who came up with the payless paydays

interpretation of the state constitution. It gets worse and worse.

Thank goodness the Pa. Supreme Court ruled against that travesty.

10. This is a victory for workers and their unions.

I think that Americans forget all the good that unions do....even now in their weakened state.
It was the unions representing these workers who brought this suit to court. No worker on his own could afford to seek justice like this in an American court and expect an a ruling like this one.
Just imagine how much more justice there would be for everyone if Labor was a strong force in our society again. In fact, it may be this nation's only hope of surviving as a Republic, IMHO.

There's such a dearth of it lately, good to hear of a win for workers. Now, the problem is to change the mindset of our non-organized brothers and sisters, who, if comments in my local paper anytime the subject of public workers comes up are any indication (I live on PA border), will use this as another occasion to descry the "lazy, useless, parasitical, leeches on the public dime." We in labor are still doing a lousy job of connecting with unorganized workers, even in "union-dense" states like NY.

13. Rendell may be a "Dem," but he is many ways a horror.

He held up state-related University funds from July to last week.

And used the same tactic to shut down many services to the needy.

He's a prick who plays games with people's lives and livelihoods.

Glad the Supremes came through on this basic moral and ethical principle.
