WTOV9.COMST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- A former Martins Ferry police chief convicted of crimes in connection with a celebrity surrogate scandal was sentenced to nearly three years in jail Wednesday.
A jury previously found Barry Carpenter guilty of receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence. He resigned from his position as chief earlier this month.
Carpenter was tried in connection with an alleged conspiracy to take items from a woman who acted as a surrogate mother for the twins of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.
Common Pleas Judge John Solovan said a prison sentence is "a must" and sentenced Carpenter to six months for receiving stolen property, eight months for theft in office and two years for tampering with evidence.
The receiving stolen property and theft in office sentences will run concurrently, meaning Carpenter will serve a total of two years and eight months in jail.
Carpenter's attorney said he plans to appeal the conviction and ask for a new trial.
