We're working with the government of a sovereign country to help eliminate a mutual threat.

7. Are we though? There's a lot of activity in Yemen, though as far as I've seen
we're only involved in singling out al-Qaeda, not in the larger rebellion there.

8. Agree. Yemeni officials are asking for our help to rid their country of Al Qaeda terrorists
Diplomatically it is something that must be done. Whilst killing terrorists, we will be seen in the ME as helping one of their governments.

20. Okay, that's true; it's more along the lines of the Vietnam mess
Sure, it's not quite like invading Iraq to overthrow a government, it's "helping" a sitting government deal with an insurgency. The fact that many in the country don't like the sitting government will not be helped by the great satan coming to its aid.

10. Threats shut Yemen’s U.S., U.K. embassies
Source: Associated Press

SAN'A, Yemen - The U.S. and Britain closed their embassies in Yemen on Sunday in the face of al-Qaida threats, after both countries announced an increase in aid to the government to fight the terror group linked to the failed attempt to bomb a U.S. airliner on Christmas.

The confrontation with al-Qaida's offshoot in Yemen has gained new urgency since the 23-year-old Nigerian accused in the attack, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, told American investigators he received training and instructions from the group's operatives in Yemen. President Barack Obama said Saturday that the al-Qaida offshoot was behind the attempt.

The White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan said the American Embassy, which was attacked twice in 2008, was shut Sunday because of an "active" al-Qaida threat. A statement on the embassy's Web site announcing the closure cited "ongoing threats" from the terror group and did not say how long it would remain closed.

In London, Britain's Foreign Office said its embassy was closed for security reasons. It said officials would decide later whether to reopen it on Monday.

22. Good reaction! When US lives are in danger, close the embassy and come
home.

Now obviously, it's the same threat in Iraq and Afghanistan, so shut it all down and come home!

Finally, a policy I can agree with!

If only it weren't the prelude to opening a third war to enrich the blood drinking profiteers of the "correct" people.

To read more on endless war and its effects on the overall economy and the people nobody cares about, see Greek Empire, Roman Empire, Napoleonic Empire, British Empire, Spanish Empire.

in a different country.

I'm waiting for the "incident" that shows that IRAN is somehow behind all of the Yemeni al Qaeda efforts.

to kill people, I would really like to have single payer healthcare, jobs for Americans in the US, and the ability to retire at an age where I could still enjoy a few years with my grandchildren.

36. Iran's too strong to invade
Edited on Sun Jan-03-10 04:29 PM by Mrdie
That's why Yemen (which is a country not reported often in the news until lately) is great!

It's sorta like the Cold War. "Invade the Soviet Union? You're crazy. Invade Grenada? Sure!"

The Iraqi Army collapsed in a week when the US invaded, after all. I can't see that happening in Iran.

You know what else is great? The Saudis hated the prospect of Yemeni unification so much (since there was a "North" and "South" Yemen until 1990) that two North Yemen leaders in the 70's got assassinated! (These being Ibrahim al-Hamdi and Ahmad al-Ghashmi) And then in 1994 when a civil war broke out between those who wanted to reestablish a Southern state and those who didn't, the South was financially supported by Saudi Arabia!

So by invading we can potentially please Saudi Arabia by installing a comprador regime!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
