GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (NNS) -- Military and civilian personnel from the Naval Hospital (NH) here were awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation during a ceremony Feb. 5.
Capt. John S. Edmondson, NH commanding officer, presented the award to the staff on behalf of Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England.
“For over a year, the hospital staff has worked hard to accomplish our mission,” said Edmondson. “The staff, without interrupting the routine operations of the hospital, did an outstanding job.”
The Naval Hospital was recognized for being the vital link in providing medical care and logistics support for Operation Enduring Freedom. Although faced with frequently changing requirements, the staff provided the highest quality of medical and surgical care to Joint Task Force personnel, and Taliban and Al Queda detainees without loss of a single life.
The hospital staff stood up the first secure Detainee Advanced Care Unit in a military medical treatment facility, which proved to be a monumental asset in providing medical and surgical care to the detainees.
“The staff showed a high level of professionalism, resourcefulness and total dedication to duty. They represent what makes Naval Medicine a world class health care provider,” said Edmondson. “Congratulations to all officers, enlisted personnel, and civilian employees for a job well done!”

Unbelievable!!! I was lurking over at Free Republic (a bunch of reports from that place have been posted recently and I got curious) when I found this piece of counter-propaganda to the reports of torture endured at Gitmo Bay by the five British citizens just sent home by Rumsfeld. Some freeper put up the article with many huge photos of medical training exercises on us troops with no cages and torture showing.
One freeper even posted:
"It takes a very special sort of person to do what these outstanding Americans are doing. May God bless them."
Unbelievable!!!
I had to register (in outrage) to post over at freeperville and put this up in response to this abomination:
"I'm proud to see the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, as crafted by our great nation's Founding Fathers against an abusive tyrant that arbitrarily imprisoned his political enemies with no legal rights (King George), observed diligently every day right there in Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
As an American who knows the meaning of the US Constitution that hundereds of thousands of Americans have died for over the last 225 years and that George W. Bush and our troops took an oath to protect, it brings tears to my eyes."
on edit- Wow. It only took the FR moderators about 15 minutes to scrub my posting and boot me from the site. Guess they find the Bill of Rights to be too threatening to their beliefs. I must admit I was hoping for better than that. Very sad.
