Independence Church Raided, Man Arrested on Federal Weapons Charges

INDEPENDENCE, MO - Jackson County Sheriff's deputies raided an Independence church Monday night after a year-long investigation. Police said one man was arrested on federal weapons charges at the Independence House of Prayer Church, but did not say who he was or what affiliation he had with the church.

Deputies remained on the scene Tuesday morning, both at the church and the church's parsonage. Police said during the raid, they were looking for computers, records and weapons.

KMBC's Brenda Washington reported that the pastor of the church was taken into custody on suspicion of federal firearms violations. Investigators have not released the pastor's name.

If you sell a gun to someone who's legally prohibited from owning it, by reason of felony conviction, domestic violence conviction, mental illness, etcetera--and do so knowing or suspecting that they're prohibited from owning a gun--then that's a federal crime.

Here's what we know:

* One person was arrested for violating the Federal Firearms Act.

* Three people were detained and released at the scene.

* Authorities seized "numerous files, computers, firearms and a substantial amount of currency."

* The search warrant covered a "residence, an attached apartment and a church/school located on the property."
