S.C. first lady’s memoir to be released next month

CHARLESTON, S.C. — South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford’s memoir about dealing with her husband’s infidelity will be published next month.

The 240-page “Staying True” goes on sale Feb. 5, according to the Web site for Ballantine Books, an imprint of Random House Inc.

The book was to have been published in May and neither Sanford nor the publisher immediately returned calls about the change in release date.

Jenny Sanford filed for divorce from Gov. Mark Sanford last month and a final hearing on the petition is scheduled for late February.

Mrs. Sanford, nee Sullivan, is from Winnetka, IL, a great-grandaughter of the founder of the Skil Corporation (inventor of the portable circular saw), graduate of Georgetown, a Wall Street success (Lazard Freres & Co., VP of Mergers & Acquisitions,) met her soon-to-be-ex at a party in the Hamptons. She made a bad call on the merger with Mark. She seems to be from a classy background and I for one wish her a fulfilling future, and to see the light of progressive politics, not the R she's been.

7. I don't blame her for divorcing

him, but to publish a memoir about it seems to me to be overkill. If she needs the money okay, and I think it will sell, but it may lead to more questions than answers.

A real memoir is supposed to be the summing-up of one's life-work after a long period of introspection and thoughtful analysis. This sounds like (of course I'm making assumptions here), a rushed-out load of ghostwritten crap. It seems that when people become 'overnight celebrities,' particularly when that celebrity arises from unfortunate and/or salacious circumstances (such as one's idiot husband cheating and making a fool of himself while doing it) the first reaction is to try to 'cash in' on it. I'm not saying she isn't a victim, but it's a shame she (living what is I'm sure a decently comfortable existence already), and not one of the legions of other cheated-on spouses in the world, gets the payday for her pain and suffering. My guess is she and her publisher are rushing this out before her very short life as a talked-about public figure comes to an end, in order to milk as much as possible from this situation.

seems a very accomplished person on her own. I expect her book may be a very good read, and unlikely to be ghost-written. An heiress to the Skil Corporation's coffers, I doubt she needs the book royalties.

I don't doubt that she doesn't need the money -- but receive it she shall (though maybe she will donate it to charity). Doesn't change the fact that she's still 'cashing in' on the situation -- perhaps it's fame or a higher-profile that are motivating her -- or perhaps she just wants to be 'heard' or 'make a difference.' Nothing wrong with that on the surface, though plenty of other people have better claims to being heard but lack the connections or wherewithal to have a book about their life out mere months after rising to national fame due solely to the actions of others. I don't mean to say she's a bad person . . . it's more a comment on culture and the artificial gravitas that is ascribed to many 'instant celebrities,' simply because we know their name . . . not to mention the fact that, regardless of their circumstances, they still get paid (often handsomely) to tell their stories. The fact that her 'memoir' is appearing just in time before the story goes down the memory hole just doesn't sit quite right. Of course, I'm here on a web forum talking about it so what does that say about me? ;)

Since, as I read this, his soon to be ex wife controls the real money in this mariage, he will be in a bad position when it comes to pay outs. Of course, he will have to support his 4 sons, right? He will have to have his lifestyle separate from his wife, right?

This will take money. How much is his in this marriage?

I get the feeling that this guy is in real financial trouble. He obviously threw in his lot with a moneyed wife and her family and when his wandering eye just happened to wander too far, well...too bad, so sad.

Maybe he'll have to get a job in B.A. with his "Soul mate." That would be so cool...
