Powell says prewar intelligence wasn't `cooked'
WASHINGTON (AP) Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday defended the decision to go to war with Iraq, saying intelligence before the U.S.-led invasion not ''cooked'' even though inspectors have not found banned weapons.

''We may not find the stockpiles. They may not exist any longer, but let's not suggest that we knew this,'' Powell said on ABC's ''This Week.''

''We went to the United Nations, we went to the world, with the best information we had. Nothing that was cooked,'' he said.

With this Friday marking the one-year anniversary of the invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein, Powell and other Bush administration officials appeared on the Sunday talk shows to defend the war and call attention to advances in rebuilding the country.

Raw intelligence, as in 'consumed without analysis or vetting'.

...or as we say around here, "I saw it spray painted on a wall somewhere, so it must be true."

Steph then shifted to the failure to find WMDs in Iraq -- and Ted Kennedy's charge that there is a "credibility gap." Powell gave the mandatory "That's what we believed, the intelligence was not cooked" boilerplate answer. (One wag over at Democratic Underground said that's true -- they selected "raw" intelligence that had not been subject to proper review and voilà! WMDs in Iraq)

WROTE THE LIAR MYSELF tOLD HIM THERE WERE NO WEAPONS

1000s of us here at DU wrote Emails daily to any one we thought would listen. We pointed out documents like UNISCOM's report of the debriefing of Gen. Kemmel. Even the inspectors now admitt there has not been WMDs in Iraq since 1994

Over 1,000,000 protesters in Washington had the same message. Even the UN decided not to back the phony evidence

We need to write the media and tell them not to buy into yet another lie

14. Powell's own Intelligence....
agency in the State Department (INR) warned Powell before the war about the very questionable "evidence" of WMD in Iraq. Yet, Powell and others would tell the country that Saddam no doubt is a threat.....sheeesh! I only wish the US Media would wake up from their 3 years of sleeping and question this WH like they should!

21. If the intelligence wasn't "cooked"....
Edited on Sun Mar-14-04 11:55 AM by motivated
..then why does he feel the need to say this? And he contradicts himself here...

First he says; ''We went to the United Nations, we went to the world, with the best information we had. Nothing that was cooked,''

Then he goes on to describe the "intelligence" they did have...Powell said most of the intelligence ''was not wrong. We had a country that had the intention to have such weapons, that had the capability of having such weapons, they had the infrastructure for such weapons.''

This would be like busting someone for drugs, even though they don't have any drugs. ...but we bust them because we felt they intended on buying drugs, they had the money to pay for the drugs, and they (edit: HAD) tools that might be used to consume drugs.

This isn't "intelligence". It's speculation. And that little dog and pony show Powell put on in the UN didn't focus on speculation.

24. He made such a fool out of himself before the UN , what else can he say?
Edited on Sun Mar-14-04 12:03 PM by Marianne
He continues to look like an ass and say things that are foolish. Defending the slaughter in Iraq is not exactly commendable. He also defended the coward in chief, and said, while testifying before the congressional budget committe, that Bush has lots of allies who support him and his occupation. Would he have us think he, the Secy of State was also bamboozled and fooled by little, inept people who had not the intelligence resources the mighty military machine of the US does?

They will keep this up as long as they can get away with it. Never admit to a mistake, never admit you were wrong. Defend Hitler if that is what it takes, and believe me, if it were necessary I think Bush, Cheney, Powell and Rice and all the rest of them would do so if, by some bizarre twist of fate, it meant saving their own necks.

He just means that no documents, tape recordings, hard drives, etc. were actually baked in an oven, or heated up in a microwave, or boiled in a pressure cooker, or seared over a bar-b-que, or ....

However, all this will be done soon to any documents that they locate in Iraq that implicate Bush II, Bush I, Ronnie, Rummy, etc. in Saddam's doings.
