Care center repays kindness of dedicated employee
Source: The Daily Star

Carol Haynes said she loves to see the residents at Mountainside Residential Care Center smile, so she saves her change in a Mason jar until she has enough money to throw a party. Haynes, 61, of Fleischmanns, said she works six days a week. She washes dishes at the Margaretville nursing home and works a second shift cooking and cleaning at the Binnekill Square Restaurant.

Haynes said when she first went to work at Mountainside in 1997, she and two other employees would pool their money to buy chips to make Christmas cookies for the residents. Her two friends passed away, but she continued saving and sharing.

"Now I am the last of the three musketeers," Haynes said Thursday.

Haynes said three of the residents at the home were her former neighbors, so she began visiting them and decided she wanted to do something to brighten their lives. "I sometimes do little things, but I usually give pizza and hors d'oeuvres parties," she said. "That way, a whole bunch of people can benefit from the joy of it _ and the more the merrier."

2. It's sad to realize what a novelty stories like this are these days
Such things-especially on the part of the employer- didn't used to be all that unusual.

7. I work part time at a nursing home . . .
Edited on Fri Jan-08-10 01:29 PM by DollyM
I was hired in November to assist with activities at a local nursing home. (First "real" job I have had in a year so I am very grateful for it.) I can tell you how tightly the budget is stretched just for activites so many of us pitch in and buy and donate "extras" for the residents. We can make a few dollars go a long way and it really helps the morale of the residents. I would encourage anyone who isnt working full time to go volunteer at a local nursing home. We always need people to come and just spend time with the residents just doing simple things like playing a board game with them or cards, is always appreciated.
